Congrats. But it's not about making Singapore proudo or even CS proud. His winning is his own effort, his own hard work, his own joy. Nothing to do with Singapore or CS. He didn't represent Singapore in the competition. He represented himself.

When you see Tiger Woods win the British Open, do people say, he did USA proud? When you see Venus Williams win Wimbledon, do people say she did USA proud? Of course not! Those are private tournaments, not inter-country tournaments.

It's one of those things that irks me-- that Singapore (and even Asians in general) is so insecure that we always have to talk about so and so doing S'pore proud, so and so carrying the S'pore flag high, etc.

Even Mardan Marmat who just missed the cut at the British Open last night said he was disappointed that there were so few Asians at the tournament. It's a very tribal, very us-vs-them kind of mentality that reflects an insecurity and an acceptance of our inferiority compared to Westerners.

I don't think it's appropriate for this New Age.

We are all one people, all part of the human race, I don't see it as Asians vs Westerners or S'pore vs others. If I enter a photo competition, my nationality is unimportant as long as there is no racist or nationalist discrimination. My work is judged on my own merit. If I'm good, I'm good. If I'm bad, I'm bad. I don't fly S'pore flag if I win, I don't shame S'pore if my work is lousy.

As requested by Yin's post, here's the article's text:

At 12 NOON, on the 12th day of the 12th month, 12 Leica photographers met in central London, their aim to use a single body with a single lens to make 36 exposures, and to choose from those shots a single image that, to them, best summed up the day. They were all participants in The One Challenge.

The idea was the brainchild of Bill Palmer, a ten-year Leica user and regular contributor to the Leica internet 'Forum'. Bill instigated The One Challenge so that a group of like-minded people could get together for a few hours, meet each other and take some pictures. It caught the imagination, bring people together from the UK, Netherlands and France.

The group that finally assembled on the day was totally mixed in terms of experience, time using Leica equipment, distance travelled and familiarity with the location. Manny chose to use unfamiliar lenses, bodies or film stock on the day because they entered into the spirit of the challenge.

In the event, all were confronted with a very cold day in December with flat - and fading - light. Their images were posted on the Leica Forum on 28th December 2004. Each was anonymous, identified only by title, with details of the equipment used. Forum members were invited to vote for their favourite image, with a prize for the winner. By the time voting closed on 7th January 2005, 81 members had commented and cast their votes. Here are the top three...

BTW, what the article omitted was the fact that we all had a time limit of two hours to shoot our 36 exposures - after which we all met up again in a local pub to exchange "war stories".

... and the text for my image was:

I just took a simple shot of the waiter serving some customers over the counter and as I was walking away, I noticed this old man on the trolley wheeling up to buy a cup of coffee. What really caught my attention next, apart from the old man on the trolley, was the fact that the waiter refused to accept the old man's money and insisted on giving him a cup for free. I hurried back just in time to capture the moment when the waiter reached over with that free cup of coffee.

We are now trying to sort out this year's The One Challenge, current plans is for the shoot to take place in Amsterdam. That should be fun... if I can make that trip outside my project schedules.
