hi,
I am looking for a long lens for Leica M. I found good comments for the the Summilux 75mm 1.4 and the Elmarit M 90mm 2.8.
Anybody could advise about this?
thanks!

In terms of value for performance, get the 90 f2.8. Nice bokeh and sharpness.

Summilux 75mm can be a little heavy, both in physical weight and price wise. However, bokeh is one of its kind.

Personally, I find the 75mm neither a 50mm prime, or the 90mm for portrait. Now with the new 50mm 1.4 aspherical summilux, it's even easier to decide which one to go for.

thanks, Canturn.
I will buy 2nd hand on ebay, so that the new APSH models are not in my reach.
Size and weight of the lens don't bother me. I am used to a heavy SRL system, which weights almost 3kg. Now a rangefinder seems like a feather to me (everything is relative...).

In the 90mm range, which version is recommendable?

Get either the 90mm APO aspherical f2 for $2500, or the elmarit 90mm for $1300. Actually, I've got the latter one (black) for sale coz I've upgraded to the 90mm Apo Aspherical. Let me know if you're interested.

I myself use a Leitz 90mm Elmarit. Its bokeh is real good! Best thing is that it doesn't cost a bomb like the 75mm Summilux!!! :)

thanks for the advice, appreciated!
I'm now looking at ebay, to have an idea of what the prices are.
2500 for the 90mm apo seems like a good price, but not easy to find. The elmarit seems to be more popular, hence easier to get.

The elmarit is a good buy! My friend got his for only $900!!!

I look to the range of lenses as oppurtunity.
Both the 90mm elmarit and the 75mm summilux are pretty damn good lenses..and both are suited.
Even the bodies are specific...

To me bokeh comparison is meaningless, it's how you take the shot,
and what many stops can each lens provide in term of opportunities.

I have a 90 elmarit, and it's pretty damn good for day light use, but for night time usage, you're restricted to brightly lit interiors, unless you're willing to push it to asa 1600 and use speeds of 1/8, 1/15, 1/30. A pretty harzardous option.

The summilux on the other hand, allows you to handhold your system at film speeds of asa 400(which is very risky), but nicely does it at around 800-1600 .

I myself often rate asa 400 on my film at night for compensating dev, but that's because I use only 50 1.4 summilux at night. Not recommeded for longer focal lengths.

If you want to use the 75mm summilux , I would recommend getting an m body with a .72-.85 mag factor. That is, if you're using it primarily at 1.4.
Focusing accuracy is paramount!

I'll leave it to your personal choice, but do consider the older variant of the summicron 90 f 2. NOT the newer versions and apo, as due to the 'improvements' they're incredibly sharp even wide open. But the older versions I think should be your jack of all trades..it's nice having an f2 aperture even at 90mm focal length!

Cheers!

Hi

firstly, hi wisp, nice meeting u the other day :)

secondly, i think it's already mentioned, but it bears repeating again. anyone looking for the 75 summilux or even a 90 elmarit would do better with a high magnification body, eg the Leica M3 or the 0.85x versions of the M6 / M7 / MP.

it would make using those lenses more pleasurable, not to mention the increased focusing accuracy. Adding the accessory 1.25x magnifier to a 0.72x body helps too. i have one of those, wickedly expensive but otherwise works as advertised. no visible viewfinder darkening either.

the problem with the 75mm summilux is the (IMHO) stupid 75mm framelines! in my opinion, another reason to go with a 90, esp if u have a M3 body.

i've been quite tempted to send in my m6 for 75mm frameline removal

I heard that some Japanese company had came out with a viewfinder magnifier which offers even higher magnification than the Leica's one!!! No joke man! ;)
I agree with others that if one decide to use a 75mm, 90mm or 135mm lens, one should at least have a viewfinder magnification of 0.72. For me, I am using a M6TTL 0.72 with a 90mm Elmarit (no probs shooting wide-open at all!).

Hey Red Dawn, glad to know ya here.
well, for me I prefer a .58 because I don't use the elmarit 90 all that much...unless it's a posed shot which I rarely do. I make do with a 35-50..mostly 50mm. 35 I gotta borrow once in a while..

I mean the Leitz Elmarit. The newer version with the lens hood is going for around 1300.
