LEE Filter System

Hi,

i am using LEE system with soft and hard GNDS.. and screw on ND filters..

i say get a dedicated ND instead of doubling up ur GND as an ND.. The effect is different as the GNDs is not Dense enough for that purpose.

Hi NNB do u mind sharing which combination of LEE filters/screw on ND r u using now? Out of all filters you got which u use more frequently? And which r less useful? Hope to hear from your experience. Thanks.

What i have :-

Lee 0.9 Hard, 0.6 Soft GNDs
B+W 110/106
Hoya ND8/ND400

I use all of them, since diff combination yields diff results..

i.e. ND400 is much cooler compared to ND110 warmer tones.

Hi thanks everybody for your feedback. Think i will start with LEE filter Holder + Hitech GND and ND. Just have a feel how these filter work first, maybe in future will invest on the LEE big Stopper. Time to check for the price :)

Thanks for the info. May i know where u bought all your hitech filters?

From your current set up, seem like you use mostly 0.9 and 1.2 (3-stops and 4-stops) only, is this enough to cover most of the landscape photograph? What about 0.3 and 0.6? I'm still thinking which combination to get since i never use any filters before n need your advice here.

Sorry for the late reply.

Got all my Hitech filters from TK Photo.

For my landscape photos, the 3-stops GDN and RGND are able to meet my needs. Don't feel like shelling out more dough for the 1 and 2-stops filters.

Actually, the trend these days is to fire multiple shots with different exposures and make use of layering to cover the entire dynamic range of the scene. I am just a little lazy for that sort of thing. :bsmilie:

I think it is something call digital blending is it? From what i read from the net, digital blending only work for dynamic range up to certain no. of stops only, am i correct? We still need a filter for greater stops, and also some kind of motion effect.

Just check the price today, LEE holder + adapter ring around $200, Hitech GND $90 per piece while LEE GND $155, set of 3 LEE GND $375. Really not cheap, need around $400-$500 to start playing with it....:(

Then you gotta weigh the pros and cons of owning it. Are you going to specialise in landscapes? How often will you use it? Will the Tianya or Cokin filters be a good compromise? etc.

Otherwise, buy the holder+ring and purchase the filter a piece at a time and learn to use it well before acquiring another.

I agree with gaz - if you are VERY serious into landscaping... buy it one piece at a time!

I just got my Lee bracket and ring last month... $200...

Hitech 0.9 soft GND $90 just recently...

Preordered my Big Stopper...which will be covered probably next month... $188....

Take it as if like "paying by installments"... You'll feel less pinch on your wallet.

Btw, TK has Cokin P systems brought in recently... a cheaper bracket alternative. But be aware that P system is 85mm...

If you want Lee/Hitech - get the bracket first + ring if you can afford to push the budget a bit... then...slowly... piece by piece... the GNDs and NDs... By end of the year you'd have a substantial set to work with!

Ya, i like landscape a lot!! 80% of my pic now is landscape. Thinking to get a decent set of filters for long run, in stead of keep upgrading in future, which is a waste of money too.. I should be getting LEE Holder set + Hitech 0.6GND and 0.9GND to start with, $380 can settle...

$380? that only for LEE holder set + GND. What about ND filter?

Yeah I agree that GND hard can also be used as a normal ND. They should have the same effect. Have fun with your filters! But take extra care when taking them out and storing them :)

Thanks for your advice, think i have to get something like filter pouch to store them properly ;)

I have been trying to hunt down a filter pouch for 100mm filters. For 100x100mm, no problem, can use a CD case. problem is 100x150mm GND. No pouches available so far. You can only get it from USA or UK.... I am going to make one myself... see how it works out.
