Hi guys and gals

Does anyone know if a leaking underwater housing can be repaired?
I have a friend whose casing for the Canon S1 that she goes diving with. According to her its not water tight anymore.

Any solutions? Thanks.

can send it back to canon service centre and see if they can do anything about it?

Is there any place or method to detect and check the casing for damages?

Thanks a lot. Will pass on the number and address.

My friend said on her diving trip, she saw a "pro" with 4 big cameras, of which 2 were damaged because of water getting into the housing. :o Wow, do housings go through so much wear and tear in the water?

perhaps he floods the housings for a living? pro flooder...

I would say check the O-ring first.

Improper seating , insufficent greasing or dirt/sand/insects stuck on the O-ring can cause floods.

Sometimes, the O-ring might be old (or cracked) and no longer forms a good seal.

A friend of mine flooded his camera due to one little ant stuck on the O-ring...heart pain like hell. A pro recommended blowing with a bulb blower and regreasing everytime before sealing the camera in. "Check and recheck." he always says.

If the prob is with the small O-rings for the buttons, need to go service centre, don't think can change those on your own.

Hope this helps.:)

Besides SCUBACAM, Diver Airman also has a pressure chamber to test these items. Not sure if he is cheaper.

O-rings are the most likely cause of leaks.

The casing may also have some hairline cracks at the corners. Inspect the casing in bright light from all angles and sometimes you will see the cracks show up.

A pro with 2 flooded housing's OUCH! Sometimes so many gadgets and stuff just distracts you from being careful... some believe in lots of gear and redundancy in case of such bad luck. There is no real answer, you just have to know what type you belong to and stick with the plan.

There is a poll about leaking housing at http://forums.clubsnap.org/showthread.php?t=134031&highlight=flood
and another cs member posted photos of his cracked housing at http://forums.clubsnap.org/showthread.php?t=169321&highlight=crack

Yoi can check these out and find out what is the cause of the leak.

I flooded 1 camera and it is heartache enough for me to take extra care on my future dives. But I still flooded my epoque strobe. Probably due to me putting in a freshly charged (still warm) battery into the compartment and lead to expansion and ultimately leakage. At least this is what I think.

Now, if I have no time to double check my camera and accessories before entering water, I will just leave it on land and enjoy the dive w/o camera.
