 actually this was one of my worries, (first) Sony's premium lens (G and CZ) was a lil pricey compared to other brands, (second) limitated prime lens editions, and (third) high depreciation cost on Sony equipments and accessories.

i'm quite happy holding my ex-Sony Alpha A200W but with those considerations, i kind of worried

which prime are you eyeing in the other camp?? personally i do find the alpha's lens lineup sufficient for a variety of situations. only bad point is the limited G & CZ lens available thus having to rely on at times 20yr old Minolta glass to get the job done

for alpha camp the only hard thing to sell is the body since we have a small user base which makes equipment turnover rate low while good glass is always in demand. but hopefully with release of more full featured bodies, we could win fans over from the other camps rather than losing them

I find it rather amusing that people think Sony is lack of lenses line up. Of course, if you are talking about prime past 300mm then Sony is not for you.

16mm, 20mm, 24mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm, 100mm, 135mm ? not enough?
then again there are
CZ 16-35, CZ 24-70- CZ70-200, 2x TC, what else is missing?

All above are f2.8 or wider? and great thing is they are IS lenses when you put on the Alpha body... don't think other camp has that capability on all their lenses...

11-18 for ultra wide APS-C lens...

Also find it funny when people take into re-sale value of the gear... if you are not sure about photography, why go into high end gear?

If you still think you need a better gear to get a particular shot, then you are not serious about photography...

Each brand has the good and cons to it, and you r going to face the same thing again and again regardless where you are going.

Talking about limitation, Medium Format gear is even more limiting... why great photographer in commercial photography still use them? because camera equip is a tool not the idea behind the great images we see on any visual media.

Hart

This will be my last post using Sony Alpha A200 with 70-300mm kit lens at Singapore Zoological Gardens

kit lens cannot make it one......all brands are like that. if kit lenses are good, who will spend money on prime lens.

Not all kit lens are bad (for eg: 5DM2's kit lens is a L lens).... Btw "prime lens" are often referred to "non-zoom" lens... :)

Its won't we a war lar, not even feel offended and I do know this is a farewell post. But then again it is just my personal view, to many it probably means nothing.

Anyway, good luck to you with a new venture...

Take care

well u still also have to take into account the market segment of the camera... do you see canon bundle L lens into the 450D kit???

Kit lens is still a good lens considering it's price and nothing to worry about...how big you print your picture? A very good training lens and It still one of my favorite lens as it gives me a wide to medium zoom.

Currently all L Lens are EF mount, there is no L lens for EF-S mount yet. Most kit lens cover wide angle (starting from 17mm or 18mm) with 3.5x zoom (or more). Do correct me if I am wrong, there is currently no L Lens that start from 16-18mm (with IS built-in) with a similar zoom factor right? One of the reason was that there isn't a huge market for this type bundle for kit lens.... :bsmilie:

Nevertheless my reply was to an earlier comment (from ninelives) that "kit lens cannot make it one......all brands are like that"... is that not all bundled kit lens cannot make it.... ;)

I also don't think that kit lens do not make it. I use my Sony kit lens 18-70m for my travel photos and it gives me pleasant and beautiful photos, even print to A3 size; except when in low light conditions. Because it is cheap, I used to abuse the lens during my travels, throw around (of course not drop), used it in drizzling conditions, dusty and sandy conditions, without much worries... wonder i will do that if it is the more expensive 16-80m CZ. Of course, i am just an amateur and i do not pixel peep.

As for Sony lenses line-up with regards to the other camps, if you have the money, Sony lenses are much more comparable than their competitors, in primes or zooms, in wides or teles, even in a 500m reflex. Which camps do you find CZ lenses that give you auto focus and image stabilisation? Which camps do you have image stabilisation for ALL prime lenses? Of course I talking about system (not just solely on body or solely on lenses).
Unless you are saying the lack of 24-105 f4, 70-200 f4, etc. which may soon be available. Else, in the meantime, there are 3rd parties lenses and old Minolta glass to fill the gap.

I believe it is not so much that Sony lenses line-up is limited, it's our cash that is limited ;p

You are different lah bro. Todate when I revisit to see your pictures taken with the kit lens, my jaw still drops and I can only hide myself under the blanket out of embarassment. You've really put the kit lens into very good use.

Currently all L Lens are EF mount, there is no L lens for EF-S mount yet.

C** would never build L (EF) lens for EF-S mount :nono:

450D can use all L (EF) lenses as well as EF-S.
EF was designed during film days & are FF compatible. EF-S is for APS-C only.
It was designed for EF-S such that the rear element might hit the mirror.
Many had suspected that this was intentionally crippled by C**.

This one had been discussed & debated to death. IMHO:
Sony 18-70 is still bang for buck (afterall it's a starter lens) & I'm not saying it's bad - just utilize within its' limits.
There're a few caveats: corner sharpness (specially wider aperture) - need to use f5.6 or smaller.
But for anything above f16, diffraction set in. It's also suffer from fringing or CA (specially high contrast backdrop).
At this moment, Sony somehow do not have quality kit at enthusiast or hobbyist level.

This lens is also worse off than legacy lenses like 24/28-85, 24-105,etc..
Sony somehow compromises it with a larger zoom range, maybe to induce BBB virus or to move up?

Alternatives are CZ 16-80, 24-70 (quite ex- though) or 3rd party.
Other than that (if still not your cup of tea), really need to look elsewhere..
or maybe prime..

The 16-105mm would definitely make a better kit lens although the 18-70mm will give good images too if used within it's limitations.

for those on a budget the tamron f2.8 zooms are value for money. but if going to CZ lens the 24-70 is worth the moolah

Not different lah bro, no other lens last time mah..can shoot landscape, abstract, macro and portrait (with help of PS during PP). But even now, I still like it and use it for landscape and macro (with reverse lens). A very underrated lens but can give wonders if people know how to use it...so cannot say kit lens cmi:nono: (for me that is:))
