LAndscape shooting, water body slow shutter speed shooting.

May I ask you guys how to determine the number of stops we need for different exposures? What are 'stops' actually?

Each stop of ND will reduce the amount of light by 50%. so 1 stop ND reduce the light by 50%, thus giving you twice the shutter speed without changing ISO and aperture. That is why we also call it ND2, since you multiply the shutter speed by 2. So, a 2 stop ND reduce light by 75%, giving you 4x the shutter speed, that is why it is called ND4.

How many stops to use? You have to ask yourself, how long do you want your shutter speed to be. Once you know that, calculate backwards to your meter reading at the moment, and you will knows how many stops you need.

ND110 is not a must.

Nothing is a must.

ND comes in a lot of flavors and a lot of brands. Use the correct ND (number of stops) for correct desired effects.

more popular ND filters:

1 stop - Hoya ND2, B+W ND101, Cokin P ND2, Lee ND0.3.
2 stops - Hoya ND4, B+W ND102, Cokin P ND4, Lee ND0.6.
3 stops - Hoya ND8, B+W ND103, Cokin P ND8, Lee ND0.9.
6 stops - B+W ND106
9 stops - Hoya ND400 (8.5 stops actual)
10 stops - B+W ND110 (around 9 stops actual), Lee Big Stopper.

Greatly appreciate this info DareDevil123.
Was at totally lost about all this ND type... or GND, CPL.
This chart helps alot on ND aspect.

So most of the senior in here usually buy all series? ND2+ND4+ND8+..etc

Depends on what each individuals need.

I have GND2 (which I seldom use), GND4, GND8, ND8 and B+W ND110

Get what you need... or in this case, one you think you will need/use the most.

I see.. thanks for the info.

Isn't it more of like, what the situation need instead of what you need? Just a little thought.

What you need.

You can still bend the situation to a certain extent in PP. ;)

I suppose it's a very big difference in ND2 and ND8 v

2 stop difference. 4 times the exposure (shutter speed). Ya, quite big difference.

But usually in PP, I am able to pull back or push up around 1 to 1.5 stops with no degradation in IQ... if you do it right la.

Ok, shall read up more on how ND stops affect exposure.
