[ lament ] - four thirds is dying

Took my E-500 and E-510 to sentosa and the zoo during the past month.
Hope Oly can come out with another consumer body like the E-5xx or E6xx series.
The zuiko lenses are too bloody good to go extinct.

I dont really care. I buy when it is available and I need.
I just like to take photos of something/one I care about.

only sometimes when I got the camera with me, got time, and opportunity presents itself then I do some study like noise study

Huh? 4/3 is dead? Gee... I am buying another lens this week for the E-5...

Am I the only one in here still investing into 4/3? Hmmm... this is interesting...

Well, who cares... I am still shooting... this whole week is paying assignments for magazine/editorial, so the E-5 can "earn its worth" since I like my cameras "free". 3 magazines in one week, E-5 becomes a "free camera" in a week... wondering how many Nikon/Canon users can say that so freely...

So, my 4/3 is very much alive and kicking and still having UK editorials coming after me for images... I wonder who said "inferior", "low this and that"... I am going to smack you with three magazines... I suspect a cover in one of the mags too... so go figure...

At the end of the day, the camera is a tool, you can have the latest and bestest... if you aren't producing good images, it is just a useless toy in your hands.

Oh, this thread is not about Photography, it is about the 4/3 system... well, it is still very much alive and kicking.

Only a tiny fraction of the people who buy a DSLR shoot professionally, and a product line has to generate revenue (directly or indirectly) to stay relevant.

A "better" camera doesn't prevent one from getting better in photography, I suppose?

And I just bought two more lenses for my E-3, the 9-18 & 50mm; also bought the 14-54 a few months ago.

Well in my job they've provided me with a Canon, and I tend to get mediocre shots with it (note I've been shooting in manual mode for over 30 years and digital for more than 10 years so I do know what I'm doing)...I brought in my Oly for one job and the shots were just so much better looking! I just can't get the results with the Canon I can get with any of my Olys.

In that case, Olympus must have been beyond terrible at passing the right messages to the potential customers. :D

Yah. I hv heard this before. The 4/3 system capture is just too good. So good that all colours under the skin ie. blotches are captured, including the fine detail. Too real eh? So our workflow may have to post process to make the images less sharp and smoothen the skin. I never do that bec i prefer accuracy and i m more documentary in nature. But there is a solution for those who want - mute tone or some of the art filters.

Me too!!! Still looking at what lenses and accessories to get for my 4/3 E-3 .. after shooting for more than 30 years... hmm... I switched from Nikon to Olympus... for those who have no confidence with 4/3, I understand... Olympus is a bit slow in DSLR... but we get excellent quality lenses....

Something we seem to have in common...

1. Old timers.
2. Nikon to Olympus switchers.
3. Love the lens, not the cam.

Glad to have met you here.

I feel that, as technology is getting better day by day. I believe one day maybe those sensor from m4/3 will be able to produce dslr IQ or even better. smaller sensor, light weight, smaller lens and good IQ. Who still want to drag along their bulky Dslr and it's lens?

One of the advantages of having a m43 is also in that it allows the photographer to frame the image in the format he chooses. I am a happy 43 user, but my only peeve is that it sucks to have not much support for the 43 format. Not much choice to print the photos, and troublesome in trying to get a digital crop photo album. I went with the 5d instead of the e-5 just because it lessens the workflow for me as a photographer. If i can frame my photos in the 32 format on the viewfinder, without me having to crop the image, i would have gone Oly in a heartbeat.

Thats where my m43 comes in. Now i can frame the picture in 32, making it possible for me to use this camera without adding unnecessary complication to my workflow...

I guess it depends what you are printing to exclusively. Some print sizes favour 3/2 n others 4/3. But someone has actually calculated that if all print sizes are taken into consideration, u will end up cropping less on the average, with 4/3 than with 3/2. And one other thing, if your DSLR viewfinder is not 100% fov, then every shot you take, u actually already lost pixels bec the sensor captured more than wat u framed. If u do not know, all 4/3 n m4/3 cameras are 100% fov even the entry level dslr n the PENS. In the canikons, you do not have 100% fov in the entry n midlevel dslrs. So there you go...

when I first bought my E1, I was so pleased with the camera. I had hoped that it would be a succesfull camera system, that it will the the start of a long line of E-x cameras. Four thirds will rule the world.

Now, as I see the threads in this forum, the number of threads on four thirds is dwindling by the day and now it didn't even make it to the first 2 pages of the forum. Almost every thread is on micro four thirds. The market has spoken.
While I'm still happy with my four thirds DSLR, and I can accept the limitations, ie. limited dynamic range, poor high ISO performance, it just feels lonely in a world where people have moved on to micro four thirds.

I've no plans to abandon my camera system, but there is nothing to look forward now, no new four thirds lenses, no new four thirds DSLR body, no new four thirds innovation. I guess I'll hang on to this system till it breaks down on me. In the meantime, I'm looking at Nikon and Canon to see what innovations they've come up with.

As for the micro four thirds, it is to me, a no man's land. It's contrast detect autofocus is still not on par with phase detect autofocus of DSLR and it's promise of small and portable still can't beat the Canon G12 or even the Canon S95. Live View lags too much for action photography.
If I want small and portable on a holiday trip, I'll take the Canon S95 or even the G12 and sacrifice some IQ. If not, my E520 is light enough and Olympus Zuiko lenses are not too heavy, the SG grade that is.

I have abandon Olympus 4/3s dSLR system for Pentax, after 5 yrs of using the Olympus system. I was actually with Pentax in the early 2000 before moving to Olympus. Now i move back to Pentax...

One thing is i miss the focusing speed of my previous E-3 with SWD lenses. Missed that terribly.

It's the opposite for me.

I discovered the natural pleasing Olympus colours through my EPL1. I don't know if I can get the same kind of colours by PP, anyway, I'm lousy with PP.

So recently, I've have been toying with the idea of getting a 2nd hand Oly DSLR.....just thinking....

I think aspect shooting is possible in E-620, E-30, E-5 but only in Live View

"Multiple Aspect Ratios
Express yourself by altering how you frame the world -- choose from nine aspect ratios, from the standard 4:3 to the cinematic 16:9. By selecting an aspect ratio before shooting and easily reviewing images on the LCD throughout the shoot, the Multi-Aspect function adds a new means of expression to your photography. "

I understand, but to use the live-view to shoot events is kinda suicide to me... Haha

Let's make this clear: Four-thirds isn't dying. Oly HQ simply designated only two teams of researchers for the 4/3s and the rest of the department to m4/3. They make more money that way and they get to spend this money on more R&D that trickles over to the 4/3 side. You want something from 4/3? Wait until the m4/3 pro model comes out the end of next year. =)

So... Keep calm alright?
