Time files. This photograph was taken 13 years ago. I was studying in Melbourne and had gotten my first DSLR. Didn't know too much about perspective correction, distortions, editing, etc then. Took the camera out whenever I could, happily taking snap shots of the city.

It was late in the afternoon when one of my guys rushed to the office and told me that a water supply pipe was damaged by excavation work. The relevant authority was alerted and emergency repair works was carried out. It was pitch dark and the only light source was emitted from the headlight of the excavator. Since I carry the camera all the time, I pulled it out and snapped away. I've always had a quiet admiration for construction workers and this evening, they were in focus(literally). For a mere few hundred dollars a month, they have to tolerate dirt, dust, mud, heat, rain, haze, danger..... stuff that Singaporeans shun away from. Their mission was to repair the damaged water valve as quickly as possible so that we can continue to take water supply for granted. This is dedicated to the 300,000 foreign workers carving out a living in Singapore.

The project manager looks on. The atmosphere was tense and everyone was focussed on getting the damaged water valve replaced as quickly as possible.

The officer found a quiet(and dimly lit) corner to catch up with the paper work.

heartland in the city.....

A much photographed view of the Central Business District with the pre-war shophouses in the foreground. I attempted to capture not only the CBD but the context from which I took the view from - a corridor on the 24th floor of a public housing block. A context that is easily forgotten and taken for granted. Not necessarily pretty but this image documented the various typology of buildings representing the urban sprawl.

Outside the Crown casino complex in Melbourne. Every hour on the hour, these "fire breeders" come to live to warm up the winter night.
