After fierce fighting and being corner into La Gleize, running out of precious fuels, ammunition and supplies;
On December 23, around 17:00 Peiper received the order to retreat and on the night of 24 December, between 800 to 900 remaining men of Kampfgruppe Peiper abandoned their vehicles and headed on foot to the east.

A visit to La Gleize is very worthwhile.
Here it is a Historical Museum December 1944 established with an real authentic King Tiger at the door.
The museum has a good distribution of objects and pictures, illustrated with good maps and photos and the complete route traveled by Kampfgruppe Peiper.
