On the centre of Omaha Beach is the “Les Braves” monument, dedicate to the Americans who liberated France.
It was placed on the beach, near the original monument placed here many years ago.
It was commissioned by the French government to celebrate the 60th anniversary in 2004.
The sculptor was executed by Anilore Banon and consists of three elements.

The Wings of Hope
So that the spirit which carried these men on 6th June 1944, continues to inspire us, reminding us that together it is always possible to change the future.

Rise of Freedom
So that the example of those who rose up against barbarity, helps us remain standing strong against all forms on inhumanity.

The Wings of Fraternity
So that the surge of brotherhood always reminds of our responsibility towards others as well as ourselves.
On 6th June 1944, these men were more than soldiers, they were our brothers.

~ Anilore Banon

GIs view towards the shore

I took a slow run on the beach, from the starting point of the waves, to the ending point at the shore.
The run was a straight run towards the shore, no zig-zag formation, no fire movement and of course, without SBO, Helmet, or Rifle;
overall, it took me 1min 20 sec to reach the shore.

One can imagine the distance covered and the things that happened on 06 June 1944.

10. Gold Beach

Gold Beach is 16km long and consisted of cliffs overhanging the sea.
Gold Beach was assigned to the 50th British Infantry Division with the objectives to establish a beachhead for the deployment of the artificial Mulberry harbour, and moving inland to Caen.
To the west, to capture Port-en-Bessin and link-up with American forces landing on Omaha Beach.

Prior to the landings, German defensive positions were attacked by air and naval bombardment.
Many of the German strong points had been neutralised by the naval bombardment, however,
the first wave that land still came in under heavy fire from the German defenders and suffered casualties.

The British made a decision not to launch the amphibious DD tanks from their landing craft tank (LCTs) but to run them directly onto the beach.
This proved effective as once ashore, the tanks provided close support to the infantry and many German resistance was quickly overcome.

Despite fierce opposition initially, British forces broke through the German defences with few casualties.
They cleared minefields, laid fascines (to bridge ditches) and trackway across soft sand to assist in exiting the beaches.

By midnight on June 6, the 50th Division had landed 25,000 men with approximately 400 casualties.
They had penetrated 10 km inland and met up with the Canadians coming from Juno Beach.
