Keeping locations secret.

Prefer to share with only those I know. CS is one of the forums where mass sharing of locations is not encouraged because many are hiding behind a Nick. You'll never know who they are.

I dont know about you guys but I prefer to shoot with only a few photographers around. Too many it become a distractions. Distraction by the photographers around and also by the public who are curious at what a big group of photographers are doing.

i am of the thinking that a photographer makes an ordinary place looks special. even if someone give the the exact spot for them to shoot, they may not be able to replicate a masterpiece.

as for sharing, i don see why not. altho it is up to individuals, i felt that keeping the shoot location a secret because of wanting to keep the place "virgin", or prevent an exodus of photographers or other reasons is pretty weak. :dunno:

actually, you are right on the money. There are places where birds nest and feed, places that need little adjustments to become exotic and places that look public but actually quite secluded. Thing is usually some of these places are usually at the convenience of the residents as well as tresspassing on some grounds. In a lot of cases, its ignored by keeping low profile which sad to say a lot of newcomers are ignoring.

relating back to the study of tourism:

once you open up a new place to everyone, inevitably, there will be pollution and changes to the environment whether you like it or not. Noise pollution, litter and carbon footprints (perhaps more to those who don't care for the earth).

usually it's up to the people who go there to be responsible for what they do there, but these days, a lot of photographers (not pointing fingers) don't respect the environment they're in. they see something new, they want to shoot it and follow everyone. but they don't take care of the environment that they're in. that's why people tend to keep their locations secret. there are many implications for when more people head there.

like the tanjong pagar railway station issues.

and it depends... from people barging in on your photoshoots to people damaging the environment or over-congestion. there are reasons to keep the shooting areas secret.

places that are open secrets as to where they are, it's not really a problem.

but places that are gems and should remain that way, too many changes damage the environment and change it entirely and we lose something.

to me it would be social responsibility and respect for the environment.

then again, if you want to keep it a secret because you're shooting some **** there. hahaha then it's something else altogether.

I've seen people with the attitude that if you don't share where you shoot, you're selfish. I don't think that's true. I suppose if a shot is really beautiful, someone else would also like to try his hand in using the same location with hopes that his own shots would turn out just as nice, if not better. However, none of us photographers are obligated to share information about where and when we took our shots. I don't think it's selfish, since I wouldn't share my locations unless someone asks me (politely, of course).

True that nobody starts this hobby without the help of others, but what happened to "Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will eat for the rest of his life"? By giving out information wholesale, we end up feeding those lazybums who refuse to leave their seats to scout for good locations!

This whole thread is about sharing of shooting location right? Even if you are really Marios Pittas, it does not means anything to me because I dont know you and how you behaves when you shoot. (not a personal attack but is a fact that I dont know you and you dont know me. Neither foe nor friend yet)

In my earlier post I stated that I prefer to share location with only those I know. Well, maybe I didnt say clearly that its shooting location but with the Title of the thread in mind, one should be able to know that I'm talking about shooting location. Reason for this is because I had had enough bad experience when dozens of photographers (anyone with a camera or cameras included) storm the place and damage the plants or whatever in their way. And got blamed for the damaged caused. Some even leave a heap of rubbish behind. Our experience shooting a pair of Kingfishers in Malaysia was very a big eye opener. Everyone follows a clear instruction not to use flash, etc and most important, the last guy to leave ensure any rubbish are cleared and bought out of the forest. Can we do it here?

Sharing is good but only if the person/s you share it with appreciates the beauty of nature and respect nature. I'm least concern if by sharing, you will take a better photo than me. In fact I'm happier to see a better photo so that I can keep on improving.

I never share my location, and no one will bother asking me either, coz all the places I take are known locations. I assume no one will bring me to top secret places either so I don't have to worry all the time whether it's alright to share or not.

I assume that if there are a minority group of perverts who abuse children or cats, then we might as well keep the locations of all our primary schools and childcare centres a secret. I also assume that such sickos have better things to do than come to CS and that most CS are normal, sane people who are more interested in shooting photos than making sure National Secrets are kept under wraps.

As much as i like the Sharing is Caring concept, when it comes to locations for specific shoots...i and others consider them as Top Secret now to prevent abuse of the location or spoiling the market for those who know what we are doing.

Was amused with your avatar exact co-ordinates, nothing beyond that, no offence intended or taken. On a more serious note, I understand why some people prefer not to share locations, the availability of digital cameras.. the keen interest of so many people in the hobby.... good and bad I guess..

Pri sch and childcare centre everywhere, you walk 1 km in any direction in populated area in Singapore sure can see one, don't think same for specific place e.g. intertidal areas with flora and fauna which might be impacted by overvisitation from human

another point. if my house is a mansion in the east, and i have a pretty nice back yard facing the sea, and i reveal it to people the shots i've gotten there...

i might wake up to "guests" and their equipment at 6 in the morning! hahaha.

i cannot see how a place or location can be ruin by photographers who flog there to take pictures. They vandalise the place or do they chop down the trees?

Just an example. Take my planespotting hobby.

We have witnessed Caucasian folks who come to our locations, and act as though it is their own. They've cut fences to make bigger holes for their bazooka lens - If you recall Merkeat Hill which was beside the Changi East base. Before its closure there was actually a huge hole in the fence which was cut, and one could actually walk through onto the airport's property.

These folks dont care, because they're here for 1-2 days max, and they move on to other greener pastures. They can ruin a good hobby for many local folks. Plenty of examples - closure of Merkeat Hill, double fencing around airport perimeter etc.
