Need advice from you guys, esp. those who have used either of these bags before...

I'm thinking of getting either one of these bags for travel, I'll have my Macbook along, and I'm using a 30d with my 28-135... I'll need the massive volume to carry my books and barang barang, so their 60+ litres volume fits the job, Got a few issues with some differences though...

Can the customary barge hold the 30d with the lens well? Just dropped by the Crumpler shop earlier to take a look, it seems like the customary barge can only just barely pack it in, but I'm wondering when I get a vertical grip to go with the 30d whether it'll still fit... The karachi will have no probs holding equipment, however...

One huge difference is their bag opening zips, where the karachi's zip location requires it to be taken off and the entire pack unzipped before the cam can be taken out... the customary barge merely needs to be unzipped for access to the cam...

I tend to street shoot quite a fair bit, and I'm wondering if its a huge hassle to take off the karachi to shoot? Plus it seems like there's little stowage/access for things like passports/wallets when I travel around...

I use the Karachi Outpost & find it suits me fine.
It holds my iBook, Canon 40D+EFS60, two U/W strobes, one U/W housing+lens port.
& it fits nicely in the overhead compartment.

Hmm, what about access to your equipment?

Cos one advantage of the karachi is that I won't have to worry about whether about stowage...

these 2 bags are very different. KO is a pure camera backpack, while CB is a hybrid. CB has about half of the space for camera gear, and the other half for barang barang like books/clothes.

Not sure if CB allows u to remove the partition or not though..my lowepro compurover, i can do that and make the interior into 1 big compartment

i am actually using the Customary barge...

was also in the same position as you thinking which i should get either the karachi outpost of the customary barge..

got that in the end as i wanted something that i can use for normal day and also bring a cam along should i want shoot some photos..

the bag should be big enough to fit in your 30d i suposed. i have a 450d with grip and it fitted with no problems...

also packed in a laptop and all my other barang barang..

one thing to note though is that after all these. you wont have much other space left to keep all other things and items..

Karachi Outpost may got too heavy occasionally, usually I placed two SLR camera bodies and 4 to 5 lenses together with laptop. More than 10Kg for sure. It is useful for travelling purpose abroad, safe and convenient, but not an ideal one for daily usage IMHO.

depends on wat u are shooting.. if u going to a place n will only be shooting near ur bag, or like me, i bring a belt n transfer lenses into those pouches.. KO is fine by me.. however if i need to move ard alot, say a wedding..then KO is not right..heck even CB won't work here... these 2 bags don't let u take out items quickly
