Just picked up the FE 55/1.8. Quick question for those who got it

Yes, I had the old version. Minolta, not the new Zeiss version.

Minolta 85mm F1.4 G RS version. Had a super mint one that looks as good as brand new. Regretted selling away.

Old version?? Minolta Sony AF?

yeah seen some selling at very high price lately....

Yes, price for this lens going up as it is getting more rare, especially mint set.

The lens stands out with superb sharpness wide open, yet with the creamiest bokeh with the nice minolta colour. At f1.4, it is sharper than many other lenses stopped down. At F4, the whole edge and centre are all sharp. Extremely sharp. Imagine this was produced 20years ago and even today, there are no 85mm lenses better than this, but probably only similar, but without the vintage glow when shot at f1.4.

You wont get busy bokeh at all with this. A keeper lens to get. If you like 85mm focal length.

Even for the current price it is worth it. Bokeh as smooth as the Canon 85L, yet smaller and cheaper.

If you have deep pockets, go for the new Sony Carl Zeiss 85mm f1.4 planar. It is very similar in optical design (if not exactly the same) and even size is about same. Just that it is RRP at $2,499. Cheaper than Canon 85L f1.2 at around $4000. I had both 85L and 85L II, and they are both extremely sharp lens too with really smooth bokeh.

If you like Rokkor bokeh. Try this. And welcome to the real creamy bokeh world.

A bit OOT.... Coming back to 55FE. I am spoilt by many great lenses sharp with great bokeh quality, and the 55FE is indeed a worthy lens.

ha i think your price for the 85L, new or old version is abit of a stretch.

current US price is $2199, no where near 4k

A old Sony Minolta 85/1.4?

get canon 85 L instead
having owned all the 85mm variants at ever one time.
Canon 85L is the sharpest,
laea4 don't goes well with minolta 85G, accuracy will be a big issue

It af is more consistent than on a99 than 5r laea2 and a7 laea4 combo. The accuracy for infinity or full body shot is bad

Wah. Jialat. Haha. Skip it for now then. Tks.

Haha.. I lazy to check street price, just took RRP price from Canon website lah.

I think i bought my local 85L II at around $3.5k. Cant remember as probably 2 years back.

When i have it with my Nex 7 and LA-EA2, it is 100% accuracy in AF. No missed shots at all.

Cant comment on A7/R, as sold it when sold my Nex 7.

Anyway, Canon 85L is a great lens too. Just that it is even bigger and heavier!

seen some smaple pix of Sigma 85mm f1.4 seems very good and price is reasonable

yea the sigma is quite awesome, modern, sharp and nice bokeh, but may not come with the magically color/rendering some are looking for from the old minolta lenses.

best thing is it is the same price new as a 2nd hand old minolta 85 1.4, and half the price of the ZA 85 1.4, comes with internal HSM focusing and lens does not extend with focusing like the ZA and minolta

some images shared previously from the sigma 85 @ 1.4
