Hi all, i just got my canon 1000D 3 months ago...and i think i need to upgrade the kit len for better zooming. My budget ain't high coz i just started this hobby...say around $300-$400 and where can i trade in my kit len for the new one? thx in advance ;)

for better zooming ?? with $300-400 ?? I think it's impossible.. probably you sell off your 18-55 and get a Tamron 17-50 2.8 at $600ish ? or just get a basic zoom Canon 75-300 w/o IS and USM which is around $300ish ??

You should post this question in the Canon forums. Can you define 'upgrade kit lens for better zooming'?Do you mean you want another lens as the same range as your kit lens or a kit-telezoom?

And for $400 you can't even get a Tamron 17-50mm lor...

Well, just post a WTS ad on Buy/Sell for Canon equipment, and maybe indicate that you might want to trade for a lens you want :)

How about considering a EF-S 55-250mm IS lens, its a good value for money lens.

What do you mean by 'better zooming'? There are defined terms when talking about lenses and you might want to read about the topic "focal length" as a basic homework. 'Zooming' (together with fancy high numbers) is used as marketing gibberish for PnS cameras. What makes you think you need to upgrade? In which way do you see yourself restricted by the current lens?
Have a look into the Canon lens line-up to see which lenses are available from Canon. Check other lens manufacturers as well. Read reviews! Check the price guide here in CS. Review your budget ... The EF 55-200mm would be a good option to accompany your kit lens, it also fits your budget.
Trading your kit lens? No shop will take it, the market is full of them. Try Buy&Sell .. but again your lens is not in high demand. Better keep it.

ok i will check out EF-S 55-250mm IS and thanks for the advise guys :)

If you really need it, save up a bit more and get a better lens...

If you just want to have a zoom lens, shoot more and really see if you need it...

As in which one? coz i was thinking to get a zoom len like EF-S 55-250mm IS for long range and will be using back my kit len for close up coz i got my Raynox DCR 250. I don't mind paying abit more for a better one which i don't need to keep switching my lenses.

In your case, I'd say 55-250IS too. It's the poor man's zoom lens but a pretty decent one at that.

Otherwise, save the $ and explore more with your kit until you really are suffering for lack of length.

dingaroo : yeah this Tamron AF 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II LD [IF] Asph. VC macro is damn good but i think this is outta my range, thx for the suggestion anyway:)

sivakis : yea i think i'll just stick to 55-250 IS coz the price is around my budget and also it comes with IS. Thanks man:D

your kit lens is also a zoom lens... it goes from 18mm focal length to 55mm focal length, so it zoooms.

cheapest option is 55-250mm, which works like a 'pair' with your 18-55 kit lens.

mb u try 55-250 n 18-55 combo.........less than $400.. ard $360 for 55-250

as far as i know, a tamron 18-200 would be great for TS, but no VC :)

AF18-200mm F/3.5-6.3 XR Di II LD Aspherical (IF) [$399 MS, Mar10]]

Thx for the advise guys,i brought this Sigma 18-200mm f3.5-6.5 DC OS in the end and i think love it.
