one question.. do we need to shoot RAW..?? i learn from the internet that some of the pro's are using jpeg, and that's is quite a good format to take pro pic's they say.

If you can get white balance right everytime... and if you think the amount of control over the pictures is enough in Jpeg.

I used to shoot Jpeg only. But these days, I shoot RAW almost all the time. Maximum amount of control and I get to tweak the WB to something I like... ;)

My Comments:

Unless you got it at a fantastic real bargain price!, you will REGRET! no matter how this thread or the old birds help you to justify the pros of the D100 vs the rest - Mark my words!

You will:

1. have to live with old -tech, no matter how good it is
2. you own an old camera with $ which could have got you a new latest tech cam - no matter how good the old one is
3 you will dig up and discover that the old camera "no matter how good" cannot do some of the things the new camera can = even those functions are of no practical usage to you
4. you will also become suspicions that some of your lousy shots could have been not have been bad if you have got the latest cam....
5 (something most people will swear they are not - but i dun believe) - you (i am assuming you are just a photo enthu., not pro or semi pro) went out in the public, you took out the camera - and there - OLD ONE! feeling how?

I think it is a mistake - the fact you ask in this thread - 'cause you are not sure of the why you want this camera - other than an impulse assessment that you got a good deal in $ terms.

This is a very fast technology product - if you do not have a fantastic deal or a very specific learned requirement - it is wise to consider the lastest one!

(Sorry if i offend anyone - but I can be considered a hi-tech freak - this is my general reaction and it typical - dun confuse this is with showing off attitude - we all enjoy the ownership of new tech/new toy - some more, some less)

yup! used to own one of this. no regrets.
get the battery grip holder, it would lasts a long while for your d100 using 2 li-on batts.

Come to think of it i wonder why i didn't get a D100 back then. :sweatsm: As in 2nd hand that is...

Anyhows, a camera is still a tool anyway... old or new, in the proper hands it'll be as good as it was brand new. :)

being an ex user , and still using , being with me for 3 year.. robust .. compared to D70.
With battery grip, u have nothing to worry....
Dun bother abt new tech..

it a good body to last you for a long time.

yup no complaint so far... i also been comparing to my 4/3, event though its an 8 mega pixel compared to the nikon d100 6 megs... so much diffrent. in handling. even for setting. i tried C camera before didn't find quite comfortable for me.. if not i would consider a C cam before. its not a bout technology, i think its how u connects to your equipment. for 1 year i have been using 4/3 quite happy with it.. but just missing some scertain Umph in the cam dont know why.. thts why testing the d100... and loving it by each time i turn on the on/off dial. :)

Good for you. I hope this is sincere feeling and I hope it stays until the camera retires.

Happy Chinese New Year.

Honestly, don't worry too much. Just shoot...shoot...shoot.
My pics are not the best. But you can take a look at my pics in my gallery. All D100 and cheap lens.

HAPPY LUNAR NEW YEAR!

The D100 does work wonders still. It depends on how you apply it.

Chasing the newest tool may not make your output the brightest anyway ;)

Heh, bro, wasn't referring to you. Think I quoted the wrong post. :embrass:

There is nothing wrong with getting an older DSLR as long as you take very good care of it. Reason being that service centres tend to have difficulty obtaining parts for older cameras.

As a professional, I still hold on to my D100 and SB80DX. I had shot countless wedding and event assignments with it and still thinks that (for some good reasons) it is better than my D200 and SB800 combo. ;)

I am personally owner of a D100. It is a good camera and camera built and I must say I love the grip. For me, the grip is one of the most important consideration when getting a camera. The body is also made of metal casing able to withstand harsher condition. It is the last range of the Nikon camera that is made in Japan. In Hokkado, you can shoot with that camera at minus 10 degree and below. Someone brought a P&S camera and that camera didnt even switch on.

The only better replacement of D100 has been the D200 which I have upgraded it.

yeah i after i check i didn't get the japan model.... i only got the china one.. :P well just my luck, but still it produce top quality images.. i compare it with my e-system cannot compete lah... right now thinking of selling all of my e-system if it wasn't for the OM lenses, i tried the 50mm 1.4 bloody hell its good..!!!! next saturday im going to get the nikon 50mm 1.4 also... i'll compare which one came out the winner the looser will go to P&S.. hahahaha..!!!

50mm 1.4 is a good lens...very good for protraits shots...but look carefully and is made in China....just take off the made in China label off the lens...some how for some reasons..Nikon manufacture those fixed lenses in PRC where the more complicated equipments like the D series body and the better lens like 18-200mm lens VR are made in Thailand..

sorry the made in china was the camera not the lens.... all my fixed lens are japan made, tried to be more aware this time ;)

The 50mm lens is also made in japan

A cam is a tool. The craftsman uses the tools that fits in their hand comfortably so that he / she can craft the object. I liked the handling of the D100 but when for the D70 because back then it cause about the same but I needed a DX standard lens as my old MF and AF lens from my film body is not wide enough.

However, if anyone wants to trade their D100 for my D70 (with Jenis grip) can do so. As I find it too small for my chunky hand to grip during those long day shoots.
