Just bought a 50L for food photography, but focus issues

Just bought a 50L, wheni tried to take food photos...every pic is blur, even my iPhone took better photos. Should I return my lens, this is a known problem with this lens. Back focusing issues

Well at f1.2 handheld it couldn't focus at all after hunting for a long time. I wanted f1.2 so I can shoot at very low light with my 5d3. I bought lens in USA, but cannot exchange now as no time left...b&h close on sat. On fact tried my 85L on shooting close subjects in low light also hunt like siao and cannot achieve focus..ie square is red and doesn't achieve green box
Since iPhone works better than use iPhone instead.

maybe you can use this lens for other usage.

Did you exceed the maximum MFD since you said your shooting close subjects? The lens cant focus at all if your exceeding the MFD

Pardon me, but you are using LCD to AF? If wanna use LCD to focus, switch your lens to MF, and slowly finetune instead

Like..... paper weight???

TS says Iphone better, than I had to agree with him, since he had already compare the images from both mediums.

How come my words are being interpreted the other way round?
what I'm saying whatever tools able to do a good job, use that,
after all, is the image that counts isn't it?

You do realise that the lens will NOT lock focus if you are too near to your subject?
This is what everyone has been trying to tell you - you are too near and have not exceeded the minimum focus distance.
I think before you give up, go and shoot with the lens in different situations. Understand the lens and camera before jumping to the conclusion that it is defective.

I have this lens also. It is good for portraits and u need to have the minimum distance before the lens can focus. For food, the effects is not as nice. A normal zoom lens take better close up pics for foods.

Most likely as what everyone here predicted. You did not meet the MFD (Minimum Focus Distance).
This baby's MFD is 0.45m/1.5ft

Anything closer than that, it will not focus properly.
If you want close-ups, you will need to get yourself a macro.

Yes indeed.... a simple zoom lens will do the job, even the kit lens.

min focus distance is too long for food photography anyway.

Such as a waste as a paper weight... Lens mug lars! :)

24-105mm mug very common... very seldom see 50mm L one..... :sticktong

how close is your close?
your 50mm will need to be 45cm away from the subject.
your 85mm 95cm.

Many thanks for the advice, I think MFD could be a problem. But most Internet sites recommend 50 mm lens for food. I got the f1.2 for low light restaurant food pics. I have a 100 mm macro lens too

About the only 50mm that can focus up to 23cm would be the 50mm f/2.5 compact macro.

Other than that, any of the Kit Lens also has the ability to do 50mm. To overcome the dim atmosphere, I would suggest you use flash with diffuser. That would soften the flash harshness on the food, but give you sufficient illumination. You don't really have to stick to f/1.2. The DOF would be too shallow anyway.
