Bro. I feel that your shots can be further improved by using tripod, longer exposure time and lower iso. There are a lot of noise in some of your photos. Some shots can be much better if you use flash as fill-in only.

Hi mtunlinn , thank you for your comments . I did realised there are lots of noise in my recent shots ...

I did not use a tripod ... Just lazy ba , i try to bring along one next time . But i do not quite understand

longer exposure time = slower shuttle speed ?
My camera iso , the lowest is 100 .
Flash as fill in only is what ? I am using external flash F56 with diffuser & bounce card .

Any bros have anymore comments here ? I am looking to improve too . Thank you !

I am not an expert but this is my understanding from read-ups and my tiny experience.

What i meant was slower shutter speed (yes). And lower ISO. If we use higher iso, proper exposed areas will not be that effected by noise but shadows areas (or those that are not well exposed) will be badly effected.

Fill-in means the flash is not the main source of light. The main source is the available light and flash is used to fill in some shadows or to enhance the subject. Of course it depends on the kind of subject or the effect that we want to acheive. If we have multiple flashes, it is a different story.

Tripod will help us to shoot at slower shutter speeds. Definitely it is not convenient but it is almost a must for DSLR macro.

I find it is not easy to use DSLR to shoot macros as compared to those prosumer cams like FZ50. There are many limitations though there are ways to overcome them.:angel:

Bro u forgotten the Fz30... hehe:)

Hi Ming,

I never shoot macro and dare not approach those spiders that near :)

how close are you to the subject with the 100m lens?

I am not very good , or can say , don't know how to control the ISO at all ba ... Always leave it at 100 ... Does filling in the flash applys to wireless flash ? not direct from the top of the camera instead , its besides or in front of the subject ... ?

I will try to shoot some macros downstairs my place using the tripod ... I find it troublesome becuase some insects are hiding or behind bushes , those are the places tripod cannot reach ...

Time to get a monopod bro!:bsmilie:

Fill-in flash can be anywhere, be it on camera, off camera or wireless. Basically, we shoot at the correct exposure value (or some near values) metered by the camera and flash is used to filled in some shadow areas. May be you can google to find out more.

It is not always very easy to find subjects to be shot with tripod. There are some specialized tripods for macro (e.g Gitzo 2540EX) but your subjects won't be always there for you to finish your tripod set-up.

I noticed that most of the DSLR macro gurus tried to get a few keepers in a day instead of few dozens of so so shots. They sometimes spend a few hours on a single subject.:sweat:

Oh i have both 3 and Monopod ... Used mostly the Monopod .

My Manfrotto Tripod works that way too ... (Gitzo 2540EX) , though its not carbon built . Too expensive to own one to leave it at home ...

Thanks for pointers mtunlinn , i will start taking my Tripod out to try moreon my Macro shoots .

Thank you for your compliments , still trying hard to shoot better .

Composition wise very good bro... But i find the flash too hash....

Thanks for Comments mtunnlin , i am working out another DIY Diffuser for my flash ... Has been trying quite hard to get the shadows diffused ... Hopefully my next post of photos will be better .:)

Hi Leong23 , if you had ever chance upon my thread , i wonder why did you never ever place me a comment ... I really would like to hear from you , i am most willingly to accept any C&Cs from you . The way you add the C&Cs were helpful . Thank you .

Don't really give C&C in CS, don't want to been portrait as a bad guy. :bsmilie:

Subject wise, you had quite a number. Like mtunlinn had mention, to improve to a next level, you might want to try out using tripod and rear curtain flash. This setting will give a more natural feel to the photo.

Tip #1.
Don't setup your equipment infront of the subject. Step back a distance away and do all the setting up including tripod height, flash, exposure and determine the composition.
Once everything is ready, then slowly re-approach the subject.
This will increase the chance of securing the shot.

Hi Leong23 ! Thanks for coming . I will not see you as any bad guy , but i do see the way you added harsh comments on some of the photos , i would feel a bit  , but its all acceptable !

See , now i know i have to try using 'Rear Curtain Flash' technique . Without you telling me , i would not have known . Normally when i look for insects , when spotted , i will slowly bring up & cam , adjust the settings & start shooting ... Stepping back , i am afraid that i will loose it ... Anyway , your points are noted .

Thank you again Leong23 .
