John 3:16 Closed!

Bought my first dSLR from them. The best price at that time after checking with other shops. Good to know it's only a change of premise.

URL not working .. saw screenshot from "Schmidt Marketing Photo" that they no longer authorized dealer due to them owing some unpaid goods.

Seemed like things has changed from the old days :(

Always enjoy chatting with Sam, his dad, and (then) Leslie donkey years ago when I am still based in Singapore. When I visit Singapore (and funan) I usually try to stop over to have a quick chat with Sam (and he still recognized me). Bought my first DSLR and lenses there too.

I really hope that everything turns right for them

I believe Leslie left J316 quite a number of years back.

Leslie is with Click now.

maybe it is a karma.. I dont like this store at all, especially with the owner.. I said this not without reason.. see my story
few years ago, I bought my first DSLR here (nikon D7000) and few lens also in next few months,
because my office is near funan so very often I went there after office hour just to see and check price
then that horrible day was coming, few months back, when tamron released 150-600mm lens, I went to this store and ask the staff (forgot his name, but not the owner) if you have the lens, he said we have but not here, if you want I can bring it to you.. then you know what happened next? the owner told the staff, "wasting your time bringing that lens here, this customer always come and look only, never buy".. he said that one in front of me also, can you imagine? (in my heart I can only say, hey your store name not reflecting your attitude, you know or not, I bought my first DSLR and few lens here)

now I only can laugh when heard the story of this closing store.. bad karma happened to you.. lol

im happy im happy im happy....

Leslie the indian guy working there, good chap. The boss Sam, has good memory and service.

Maybe its a move shop only. They had been there so many years, since his fathers time.

Their service is good, if you are an amatuer to get some info and good service at fair prices, and if you have time to wait, as big clients with fat wallets will get priority and all the attention.

Busy working photographers dont have the time to hang around in the shop to chit chat, so Cathay and TK Foto are preferred.

Thanks for sharing your research!

Erm but I'm not sure why this is relevant to the thread...
(and why spend so much time researching on a few-generations-old product, plus don't think you can compare price of original brand items vs third party ones....)

From my experience everything related to DSLRs are way too expensive - in SINAPORE. Let me quote these three example ... real life experiences:

A - major camera retailer
Panasonic G3 $450
Olympus Adaptor for M4/3 $290
Well known camera bag $168 (Funan) Adelpi $200 (50% discount)
Two extra batteries $50
Total : $950 - $990

B - 2nd Camera retailer (Near Cathay)
Panasonic Lumix G3 $450 - $550
Olympus adaptor to m4/3 $200
Total : $$650 to $750

Ebay
Panasonic G3 $315.78
Lion battery for G3 x 2 $55.90
Olympus 4/3 adaptor to M4/3 camera(Aliexpress) $57.07
Travel Camera Backpack Oxford Case / ALIEXPRESS $51.91
Grand Total : $480.66
See the differences! It is easily $200 to $500 differences!!

Main disadvantage of purchasing oversea One need to wait for 1 week to 6 weeks for delivery.

The above data is as up to date to March 2015. It is after a exhaustive recce through a few very prominent retailers to get the price.

That is not a fair comparison. I lived in US and now in China. So I know how the retail industry works in both countries. Want to compare real live example, compare current generation products. Not discontinued ones. Nikon D7200 is cheaper in Singapore from any major retailers than any shop or website in HK, China or USA. So is the 400mm/2.8FL , which is cheaper in Singapore by more than SGD 1k (even with our 7% GST included!). And take a look at prices in UK and Australia, they will shock you.

For lens adapters and other 3rd party accessories, China is a lot cheaper, because it is made there. But buying on taobao (using aliexpress), you never know the quality of the item you are buying. And for cameras/lens, I can assure you it is cheaper in the shops in China than on taobao. But are they cheaper than Singapore? Depends. Some are cheaper, some are more expensive.

For discountinued items, USA retail industry is very aggressive in letting them go at very low close out prices to clear out inventory. That has always been the case. And buying from eBay, many items you buy are grey market ones. Meaning, no warranty. That means they are either parallel imported from somewhere else, or bought in bulk as part of clearing inventory of unsalable products. While even though discontinued, the G3 you buy at SG retailers will still enjoy your warranty from the day you buy your camera.

Different brands market their products in different regions very differently. Price differentiation is also very different. We are not even talking about price of doing business in different regions (where SG is one of the highest in the world). So, if you know the retail markets across countries well, you can really save quite a bit of money. But to say what you said, by using some example so narrow and obscure, is simply too unfair.
