I sold my 24-70f2.8 away cause my wife was complaining of the weight. She refuses to handle it! I should be bringing a 24-150f4 and 50f1.4..
sometimes, i still miss my 17-55f2.8..
60mm f/2.8 macro and 135mm f/2 for me.

I stayed in Shinagawa Prince as you last yr..Good location..there's ramen shop by the road side, somewhere near the traffic light..taste gd a& within budget also..
All main areas will be able to access within the Circle Line which your hotel is situated in as well..
Other areas like Asakusa Temple , Odaiba ( Big Ferry-Wheel , TV Station and Toyota Showroom , Rainbow Bridge) , Harajuku (CosPlay and Meji-Shrine)
Tsukiji market will have lots of people and fresh sashimi..but u need to get there early..I went there at around 6am and lots of people (Fishmongers and Tourists).. If I'm not wrong, Tsukiji market is mainly meant for Tuna...so u won't find salmon there..Plenty of sashimi stalls with long queues...The one I went in doesn't allow me to take any pics...price range from 2500Yen to 3800Yen...I had the 3800Yen for just 10 pieces of sushi/sashimi...yummy!
I took the Romance Express to Hakone...I think I took around 0800hrs train..all timings are on the dot..8am means 8am..so you can't afford to be late ya! Go try the volcano egg (Black in color), took a Viking Ship to cable car station...there's quite a few Onzen (Spring) to try in..Male and Female pools seperately..all naked..so it's kinda of experience..Shops closed as early as 6pm...
Ropponggi Hills will be actually more for Gays Pubs...1 of the kind local led us there but he didn't wanna enter as the gays will tend to pull guys (single) into the pub..so beware..
Anyway, I went for 6days...so everything was kinda rush..u plan well..on top of that, go try the Maids Cafe in town..I can't remember which location...go check it out online..kinda fresh thing to see

takayama is a very nice place. but to go there from shinjuku , the travel time will be around 4-5 hours including taking bus in. so plan your way in. (advice to plan 2 days there).

Think that this is a start to a very good informative thread on Tokyo on our very own Clubsnap forum so I'll like to add on with some of my opinions.
It is advisable to reach there at 4:30am.
There is a 24/hour sauna nearby with all sorts of facilities that you can walk to after a night of partying or whatever before heading to the Tsukiji market.
Note that the sauna will not allow foreigners who don't speak Japanese in.
The stalls in the market generally don't allow photography, but with the good food you have in front of you, why waste time!

It is onsen and not "onzen".
There are mixed pools too; "konyaku" (混浴, which some people might want to avoid.
I've also heard that lately even the Japanese are not stripping themselves bare when they enter the pools. Might be a good idea to pack your bathing suit along just in case because you don't want to make others uncomfortable.
Roppongi is in the "foreigner ward".
You can expect a lot of caucasians and afro-americans there. And also the local people looking to mix with this section of the crowd. The drinks in the area are verrry overpriced.
Some places there even have strange rules like you need to be drinking something at all times to be allowed inside...
I haven't been to Hakone so can't offer information on that. For Tokyo, we stayed at two Shinjuku hotels before: Sunroute Plaza Shinjuku (http://www.sunroutehotel.jp/htok-eng/index.asp) and Nishi Shinjuku Hotel (http://www.nshotel.com/english/index.html). Both are reasonably priced especially when they got promo.

Some info on food since I love eating there:
1) Mo Mo Paradise - All you can eat Shabu Shabu, Sukiyaki. This si a die die must go place if you are a meat lover. Its at Shinjuku (address on the link).
Call to see if you can book as the Q time is usually 30min-1 hour. Go at night and after dinner, have a walk around the wild side of Shinjuku, where u will see alot of handsome "ducks".
2) Sushi Bun @ Tsukiji Market - You can also try Sushi Dai or Daiwa Sushi. Go early and have super fresh sushi.
3) Spend 1/2 day to 1 day at Megaweb area where u get nice Ramen at Aquacity, visit Toyota Showcase at Megaweb, take the Ferris wheel if you like and take photos of the futuristic Fuji TV Building.
Nice photo areas:
1) Roppongi Hills - Prada flagship store. Unique glass building. Nearby is Midtown Tower, a relatively new shopping area. Melt your gf's heart with super patissier@ Toshi Yorzauka (level 1) or Sadahara Aoki (level 13). (somehow I'm back to food again...). This is the trendy part of Japan, if you like clubbing.
2) Hajuruku on Sunday morning. Visit Meiji Shrine. Catch Cosplay (at the Hajuruku bridge) and Elvis lookalike doing rock and roll (at the Yoyogi Park).
3) Shibuya - Biggest junction, trendy stores, eye candy area.
4) Akihabara - For the Otaku in u. I love going to Super Potato. Brings back sweet memories of childhood gaming.
Lunchtime over. Add more when i go home.

Earliest direct train that you can take from Shinjuku on a weekday seems to be 0502hrs.
Anyways, people who reach there real eat for food usually walk to the place after a night out.
It's very near Ginza/Shiodome/Shimbashi.
I don't imagine that it'd be difficult to keep yourself occupied for the night/morning.

1. The first night in Japan will be expensive. The savings you get from your air ticket will be expended and far exceeded for the extra night stay and the transport
2. You can buy the JR East Pass that limit you to JR East lines. Can take North bound but not South bound Shinkansen. Get the 4 day Flex pass Y20,000 with 30 days validity. Choose the 4 days to use it.
3. hakone region is not covered by JR pass, Buy a 2 day (weekday) pass allowing unlimited travel almost all transport in the region. Can get pass and train ride fron Tokyo shinjuku station.
4. Instead of Hakone, why not stay in an onsen in Nikko. JR pass cover up to Nikko station. There are various local pass to choose from in Nikko
5. The 4 day flexi pass can buy at airport. Suggest use: 1. Narita apt>Hotel 2. Hotel>Narita apt 3. >Nikko 4. Nikko>Sendai>Ueno. Can check total cost of single tickets and compare with the one off price. When in use on that day can take multiple JR East trains and bus routes.

this time sunset is about the same as SG, sunrise is 5+. if you heading to Kamakura while at Yokohama, I also suggest Enoshima island, around 15mins on the Hase station at the great buddha at Kamakura. I also suggest you to get a unlimited ride kippu if possible, the train ride + bus is covered, same goes to Hakone, get a kippu.
If you are into shopping, can go Gotemba Premium outlet, Yokohama also got a factory outlet.
Jut came back from 18 days (Hokkaido, Yokohama, Kamakura, Enoshima, Lake Kawaguchi and Tokyo) relied mainly on train, bus. Also took a boat ride to Odaiba.
I got some brief planning guide if you need. ps. if you ain't traveling between cities (Osaka, Hiroshima, Tokyo or etc) you don't need JR pass. Get Suica or Passmo is good enough.
