Actually, I don't understand how calling a Japanese a Jap can be derogratory...
It's Japanese abbreviated mah. I believe HongKee is worse. Any chance anyone can enlighten us on the history of the term 'Jap' and how it came to be deemed derogratory? Or is abbreviating any kind of name just officially derogratory? :dunno:

How about if you are a Chinese & someone address you as a Chink? ;p

Thank you for making the point.

It is not so much the act of calling a Japanes a jap, or a Chinese a chink, or a African a nigger, mind you they are derogatory, that is not the real problem here. The real problem is the fact that when informed the the term is derogatory, one demands explanation, justification and rationale to be convinced. Such should not be required. If the term is interpreted as derogatory by the recipent, it is derogatory.

English class or politics??? I think wrong thread. :nono:

In the modern English, the word "Jap" functions as either a noun or adjective....... and usually use to belittle someone, something or some events.... like it being of small importance or little worth ....

I don't believe it's the wrong thread. We are posting in response of the OT's derogatory vocabury used in the topic.

下回用华语,就不会引来不必要的误会。

Degoratory words are not limited to English., Chinese has its fair share of derogatory words and phrases.
