Ixus V, A40 or wait? urgent ...

I will definately wait for either V2 , and check out its price. Heard Ixus V nite shots arent that good, so I guess have to give it a go.


I may want to settle for bigger cameras if experts here really highly recommend them, like Casio AV2400UX or c2040, but 1 thing, are they easy to carry around and look very bulky?

Im a beginner hoping to get serious one day, and dun wish to spend on a average one and get stuck one day. From wat some said about A40 having limited manual functions, i guess thats why its selling so cheap now. Will not put it out of my consideration, but looks like 2400ux and c2040 are more popular among you guys

Thot weeguy mentioned from the manual that aperture is from 2.8 to 14. However, at any zoom position, there is only 2 selectable aperture.

Maybe someone can tell us what F setting are available at what zoom position?

Under shutter or aperture priority, you just select one and the camera will automatically determine the other one for you. Under manual mode where you need to set both, you need to know what values to set. If you set either one wrongly, the picture will not turn out good.

Does that mean that it is a vv impt feature that most people will depend on? espeically newbie like me?

So if A40 does not have it, makes it very difficult to use in manual mode?

Yes there is except that it is not full manual. only 2 F setting you can choose at any time.

not really, but it's a feature that advanced users will miss. For manual mode, say you set the aperture at F2.8, and shutter speed arbitrarily at 1/100s. The camera usually will have an indication of the discrepancy of the exposure you selected compared to the metered exposure. This will be shown in +- stops of light. So you just have to adjust your shutter speed accordingly so that the reading becomes 0 (exposure matched with metered exposure).

In aperture priority mode, you won't have to care, just set aperture and the shutter speed is determined for you. Similarly for shutter priority, the converse happens.

So, it's just a little more troublesome at manual mode for the A40. But note though, if your concern is to set shutter speed, then it may not be feasible for the A40 to attain the correct exposure since you can only select two aperture settings to try to match the correct exposure.

In short, A40's manual mode can let you do aperture priority with 2 f-stops and a little more work to adjust shutter speed. But it can't really let you do shutter priority, cos you only have 2 aperture sizes to select to match the exposure.
