Wah! Boombox I like your PP skills man... pity mine are so rudimentary... anywhere I can read up on specific skills for glamour photo?
Thanks bro!
I generally googled for the techniques online or borrowed books from the library. Topics of those articles range from very specific to a topic like "Retouching for Glamour", to very generalized books that touch on retouching and restoration of photos in general, or even the overwhelmingly heavy photoshop bible books (that I don't really borrow these days - ) that teaches you about the general functions and inner workings of a tool or a Filter.
Knowing the inner workings of a function/tool/filter is actually quite (or very) important as it allows you to work with understanding. When you know what a Filter/Tool/Function does exactly to your pixels, you can use it for that intent and get an effect that you want efficiently. This way, you can waste lesser time, can become very specific and nail the effect you want in one shot, and run into lesser problems as you work, and know what's happening if there is.
One of the very way to approach Glamour Retouching is to approach it like a Make Up Artist. There's a book that I recommend that may help - Making Faces by Kevin Aucoin.
As there are a hundred and one ways of getting the result because software tools like PS are as varied as they are powerful, I usually don't rely on a single article to get what I want for a photo, but instead, I extract some steps from one article and extract some other steps from another article, because not all the steps recommended by the coaches works best or works most efficiently for me - it's more of a gathering of techniques really.
But generally, having some basic knowledge of getting around and a sense of what you want are pretty much essential in improving your glamour photo skills.
So even books and articles touching on Glamour Photography can be quite useful because they can give you an idea of what to go for.
Yeah that's it... need to understand how each filter or effect or tool works... but many of the books are rather too abstract and jump many steps or many parts of explanation... especially online tutorials...
Well, in that case, each problem and solution has to be isolated... and be queried upon individually, like if there's a step you don't understand, can bring it up and asked to the bros here...![]()
Ok... usually it's more of post-processing... like if highlights are blown, how to draw back even in JPEGs... I have seen some very masterful work... or how to clone backgrounds... and what's the use of layer masks?
Ok, perhaps let's start: What's the use of a layer mask? In what context do I use it?
A layer mask is primarily what I want to use to limit the effects that I want to apply to only a small area of a particular layer - like maybe I want to limit my sharpening only to the eye - I'd basically Duplicate a layer, and sharpen, then apply a layer mask, and set it in a way that only the area where the eyes are - show, while leaving the rest of the soft looking image underneath untouched.
Here's the Wiki Entry of the

Risking going a bit OT here though...![]()
