It always amazes me when...

How is it a misconception? Give me an accurate analog Basal Thermometer then :D

What happens if the capillary width varies in a liquid in glass thermometer?

Can you tell me whether it's 37.3 or 37.6 in your regular analog thermometer?

i would still trust anyone by the name of geekbrains in a photography forum! :bsmilie:

i am still flopping around in the ocean as a fish!

I thought you're a goat?

It would be quite disastrous to have a goat floating in the ocean, I believe? (Dead goat maybe? :bsmilie:)

Yes the analog systems can have corrections using markings on the scale, and marking is the key - meaning you need to "eye-ball" the fluid (in case of the thermometer) or any other type of indicator against the marking to get a reading. In contrast a digital system gives a reading which includes a given number of significant digits. It is already quite obvious from here that which is more accurate, without even talking about other components like amplifiers and feedback loop.

Myth alert-- that the number of digits shown indicates accuracy. If so, people wouldn't be complaining about their dry cabinet built-in hygrometer readings being different from the standalone hygrometer readings, and wondering which is the "correct" reading.

Truth alert: Every instrument has its range of acceptable reading and nothing is perfectly accurate. point is digital easy to read and design for convenience. rather then thinking of or worrying abt the accuracy and scare gear got fungus..i rather not to owe any piece of gear at all then....they all have a range and if its within range so why need to go down to the 0.1 or anything for the matter abt accuracy?

Are u a physicist? or a Mathematicians?

I'm a realist and one who rejects bs.

People don't realise that a digital hygrometer showing 2 dec places doesn't mean it's accurate to 2 dec places.

They should not be misled into thinking so.

Having more significant digits means nothing if two digital hygrometers vary by more than 10%.

When will people get the idea that more digits in a digital display does not mean more accuracy, unless you're willing to pay a lot for a well-calibrated instrument?

How many people understand that it's the sensor which drives accuracy to begin with, not the digital conversion.

When will people see that the notion "if it's digital, it must be more accurate than analog" is not always the case. This is a misconception, no different from thinking that if a person is from middle east, he must be anti-western. True in some cases, but still an unjustified sweeping statement.

You are far from being a realist so please, don't credit yourself for that. You just don't know better that's all.

How many moving parts does a mercury thermometer have? What about battery dependency of a digital thermometer, possibility of battery leak, etc.?

mmm id really prefer to risk mercury poisoning then having to replace the batteries every 2 years on a digital thermometer... man that annoys me so much, think of what else i could be doing for that 60 odd seconds every two years whilst replacing those batteries.. sheesh...

Now now, I didn't say having more significant digits means the accuracy is up to the last digit, did I? Each instrument has its limits, and these are usually stated in its spec for instruments intended for precision measurements.

And here you are making a statement yourself. Since you're a realist who rejects bs, could you please substantiate your statement by citing statistics? How many percentage of the people in our forum have such notion? How many people have you surveyed that made you draw the conclusion that they do not understand what is going on but just blindly think that digital is better?

Oh no? Did you not say sth to the effect that if a digital instrument has a certain no of significant digits, compared to an analog instrument, it's already quite obvious which is more accurate?

"if it's digital, it must be more accurate than analog"

can u provide references or supporting evidence for this "common mindset" that people has? it is important as this statement is the basis of you starting this thread.

even if the person thinks a digital one is more accurate, what has it got to do with you? why must u be so "amazed" that u start this thread?

if u are trying to tell people that digital are no diff to analog hygrometers in terms of accuracy, you can provide some good reads and just share the info in a neutral manner. don't have to be so "amazed".

Oh really? What makes you think you know so much better? Prove yourself.

You are the one making claims so you prove yourself.

Yes indeed. In fact I'm would like to find out too, as I have already stated in my post above. Otherwise this thread could well be classified as flame bait.

You are the one making claims so you prove yourself.

Really? You're the one who claims I don't know better, implying you know better than me, so why are you afraid to prove you know better?

If you don't prove yourself, that just shows you don't know any better, and you can only give an unsubstantiated boast of your own knowledge.

I take it that you can't prove s.h.i.t. then.....

Look around you..... you think people here think you know what you are talking about? Geez, can they be any more obvious.....

A caveman who'd like to announce his entrance into the contemporary world with a chest banging ritual.....

wondering why we need pin-point accuracy in measuring humidity in our dry cabs.

get over yourself. your thread did not contribute a single bit to this forum. if anything, this should be posted in kopitiam as it is totally irrelevant to photography.

This thread serves no purpose other then as a flame bait. Thread closed and infraction issued.
