Isn't Nex5/3 a good low light camera and good specs, but so many ppl selling?

Thanks for this enlightenment!!
How abt the 18-55mm lens, is there any stabilizer?
:dunno:

Yes, there's stabilizer for the 18-55mm lens.

wow must really have deep pocket for photography ....

I'm starting to consider if I shd just a LX5 which has a f/2.0 and enjoy it.
As per my earlier post, my main purpose is for low light shots. Initially thinking nex has a bigger sensor, it shd give brighter and sharper shots.
But when I do some shots at Sony style vs LX5, somehow I do not see this is true.

I may be wrong in this, or even my skill is not good enough. :dunno:

P&S, put in pocket, LX-5 is outstanding. Serious DSLR-killer which can do many many things and is by far the smallest that can: Nex-5.

Yup, even comparing the sample photos taken with the pancake 16mm f/2.8 with my LX3, I find the Nex photos not as bright nor sharp, but just do a search online for Nex with the Voigtlander 40mm f/1.4 and it becomes obvious that the pancake 16mm is the culprit.

I just spent 2 weeks on Holiday shooting with both NEX kit lenses.

The 16mm is only blur at the corner when wide open - perfectly fine by F5.6 - and that's only detectable when shooting things that is in focus corner-to-corner.

The distortion is good when shooting architecture compared to the wide end of the kit zoom lens, or I suspect any PnS zoom.

So it all depends on your shooting style and priorities.

The light weight & compactness of the NEX5 is much appreciated when traveling. Except for the lack of EVF when shooting under bright light, I don't really miss a DSLR for the vast majority of shooting condition.

Thanks for the heads-up.

I sense some biasness to the NEX, and it's understandable if you own one. What I need is an unbiased opinion from someone who preferably owns or has owned a NEX and NX10. My instincts still say the NX10 is better.

Then you should just get NX10. Honestly, both camera has pros and cons, uses APS-C sensors. Equally capable of shooting in all conditions.

There will be biasness to the NEX , when the thread is in the Sony forum , same thing if you go and ask NX10 in the alternative forums.

You should be able to get a review of NX10 versus nex on the net on image quality.

Handling wise, just go to Sony gallery to molest the nex and best denki to try the NX10.

Other considerations would be, do you like EvF , need hotshoe flash etc.

With that , you will be ready to go. Since your instincts says NX10 is better, then its probably means you prefer the handling and EVF n hotshoe flash.

Actually, I think the NEX is superior to any m4/3 system out there in many ways...

Well, I may seem bias with what I write below, as I am a Sony Nex5 newbie .. and a happy one :)

I had a Panasonic G1 previously, wanting to try a m43 system. I actually quite liked the camera, but it could not take video, and well, was not quite performing quite as well as I had wanted in low light conditions. It was also kinda bulky, a bit smaller than a normal DSLR, but definitely still bulky.

Then this year, samsung and sony pushed out their mirrorless APSC-sensor cameras - the NX10 and the Nex-5.

Well, to me, I really don't want another bulky camera, so actually, NX10 was never in the equation for me.

Then Nex3 and Nex5 came out. I didn like the flat grip Nex3 had, so that was out for me, and it does help that Nex5 has full HD video recording. However, both cameras had user-friendliness issues, having to go into the menu with many clicks for manual control. So I didn't like this and decided to wait for something better...

Then Samsung NX100 came out, with the supposed user-friendly I-function lens, and a considerably smaller body than the NX10. Whoa, that was it, I thought. However, I went to the samsung showroom and was not impressed by its shape. It's kinda 'tall' and I didn like the grip, or the lack of it. The buttons at the back are also plasticky and cheap looking. But of course, Aesthetics can be forgiven if it takes terrific pictures. I set it to ISO 1600 and took test shots at a place dimly lighted... I didn like the noise. I also did my homework and noted from many reviews that it has exactly the same sensor as the NX10, which had noise issues at high ISO. Can use DP review comparison tools and you will see the big difference with Canon or ahem.. the Nex5. So I was resigned to wait again. :(

fortunately, I didn have to wait long, cuz the firmware upgrade for Nex5 came out and with the button settings, the Nex5 became much more user friendly. Of course, I did my test shots again, pushed it harder than what I did with the NX100, shot at ISO 1600, ISO 3200, and at really dim places... and was impressed.. I cldn see much noise even at max zoom. So I went for it and have been a happy shooter so far

I not condemning the NX10 and NX100. Both are way cheaper than the Nex5 (Newer NX100 going for $849, I dont even want to find out price of older NX10), NX100's Ifunction lens seem to be user-friendly too. And the guy at MS Color tells me that it's selling like hot cakes there. Samsung is supposed to be investing lots of resources to push out more lens this year. But well, due to economy doing well, I decided that I can spare some extra cash for a camera that can shoot better pictures at high ISO, which is important for me, cuz most of the time, I will be shooting my kid who can't sit still

In short, it is what you really want and what kinda resources you want to invest. If it's picture quality, well, at least for me, I think Nex5 edges it, cuz I can't stand noise. Same reason why I didn even consider the m43 systems, because of their smaller sensors.

Thanks for your non-contribution.

You already personally feel that nx10 is better than nex. that itself is a very important factor. Buying what you like and believe in is very important.

If you end up buying nex and the pcitures just doesnt turn out well, you will regret and will simply hate sony.

You are like going into a bmw forum and asking if the 3 series is better or the Benz C class is better. perhaps you should ask this in the 4/3 section or the canikon section. you might get a better response.

IMO, you should not be comparing NX10 with Nex due to the size/built-in-evf. only the nx100 is comparable.

I previously own a GF1, and now own a Nex3. I only miss the 20mm pancake. but when i use the D-range optimizer, HDR function, pano sweep, anti motion blur, i will forget the advantage of the 20mm pancake of the GF1.

I have the Olympus EP2, Sony NEX5 and Samsung NX10/NX100. Each of these cameras have their own pros and cons. Nowadays, if I want to take a casual shot, my hands would strangely grab the Samsung NX100 and not the other 2 even if they are nearer to me than the NX100.

Image quality is everything to me and I don't normally like to shoot at ISO higher than 800 if I can help it. Anything higher, I would reach for my D700 instead. Image quality depends on the sensor (plus onboard image processing firmware) and the lenses used. In this respect, I feel that the Samsung NX10/NX100 wins. The images from the Samsung just look better esthetically to me in a difficult to quantify way compared to those from the Olympus and Sony.

The Sony NEX5 has a good sensor and image processing firmware and some really unique functions like Sweep Panorama, Handheld Twilight and Anti-Motion Blur... the last one is really impressive as it could freeze motion even if the camera is moving (as in not steady) when the exposure button is pressed. It is however let down badly by the lenses that it has released so far. While they are generally acceptable, they just cannot compare at all with the lenses, kit or otherwise, of the m43 or the Samsung NX systems.

One good thing about the Sony NEX cameras is their ability to accept other brands' lenses and the sensor really shines (at the same time showing up their own NEX lenses for their lack of optical quality thereof) when the NEX body is partnered with a good lens eg Voigtlander RF lenses... provided the user has the patience or inclination to do manual focussing.

Of course, if I only have the Sony NEX5 to shoot with, I would also be quite happy with the result. ;)

Thats a very good round up. :) I totally agree, I start to love my NEX more when I coupled it with the Voigtlander 40mm 1.4 , simplily wonderful

Thanks for the review. FYI in my opinion the NX10 and NX100 are lightyears away from each other. I would never even consider the NX100, but you should check out the NX10 and not base it on your NX100 experience. Anyway to be honest, I would never shoot with any ISO setting higher than 800. That's why lens is very important to me.

Yup those functions on the NEX are definitely one of the pull factors. However I disagree about not comparing the NX10 with the NEX. The NX100 is frankly a POS and I would only consider the former 2 cameras. Since this is a personal preference instead of some online comparison review, I think I am entitled to compare any 2 cameras that I am considering buying.
