Isn't Nex5/3 a good low light camera and good specs, but so many ppl selling?

Thanks for the info. Since I am used to fast and bright lens (previously using an F/1.4 with my K-x and now F/2.0 with my LX3), will this 16mm pancake allow me to take satisfactory low-light portrait shots without flash as I am used to now? Also, will the DOF combined with the wide angle allow for good blurred background portraits? I am evaluating this lens from a practical usage point of view rather than how well it is put together.

related to egesg's response this should answer all of your questions:

http://www.stevehuffphoto.com/2010/07/26/sony-nex-3-and-nex-5-digital-camera-review/

This reviewer took the time to live with the nex, rather than spend a few hours as so many do.

The nex can use nearly every lens made since 1945, MF of course. No 4/3 can touch it, it is APS-C with 1.5 crop vs 2x for 4/3.

Maybe the K-X can match it for high iso, i don't know any other camera that can.

Do your homework. Don't settle for one review. Only you can say if it's for you--and you will not really know untill you have shot a few thousand images at least.

I got the voigtlander at the price from the Chiff list.

I also seen this website:
http://www.tincheungcamera.com.hk/index.php?cPath=1_70&filter_id=30&sort=product-price-descending

which provide pretty good price on the nokton 50mm f1.1 (a few hundred S$ from Chiif).

Definitely agree, that it's worth checking several reviews before making your mind, and making sure what are the features which are important to you.

Take care,

Thanks for all your replies guys. I've taken the time to read through the links you've posted and done a bit more research. If you see my initial posts, I never said the NEX was an inferior camera, just that the lens do not seem to be good enough for my needs. After reading up more, it seems my hunches were right about the camera having an excellent sensor (Sony's Exmor Aps) coupled with the Bionz engine allows for really great high iso images. However based on the sample photos I've seen the lens falls far short of my expectations. I am quite keen on the NEX5 with the Volgtlander f/1.4 40mm lens and 18-200mm tele zoom lens kit combo. I believe this would be the ideal setup for me based on what I've read so far... But I would still like to be challenged on this as I am no camera expert.

I'm no expert as well, but from the samples i took with LX5 and Nex5/3, the LX5 gives me brighter and sharper photos - not sure if it's due to the f2.0 on LX5.
that actually puts me on a stop to get the Nex 5/3 immediately. It could be the f stop on the 14-55mm lens that's on Nex 5/3 now.

:dunno:

Yup, even comparing the sample photos taken with the pancake 16mm f/2.8 with my LX3, I find the Nex photos not as bright nor sharp, but just do a search online for Nex with the Voigtlander 40mm f/1.4 and it becomes obvious that the pancake 16mm is the culprit.

To compare 40mm 1.4 normal lens with a 2.6 16mm is about as silly as it gets. They are comepletely different animals.

Since I have seen many gorgeous images tack sharp from the 16mm, including in low light, I suspect what you are seeing are user issues.

Digitalrev has a really incompetent review on youtube, where the funny kid wanders around for an hour with the nex, and thinks his images are fuzzy.

Which is funny since many professionals are using the lens.

e.g. from 30 sec google
http://www.henrikj.com/

a 40mm 1.4 would be great---expensive (mine is 1.8 40USD konica). You will not be able to buy the nex without either the 16 or the 18-55. You will have a very hard time finding a 18-200, but it is a very good lens, for sure.

The LX3 is a nice P&S but does not approach the nex-5 as a serious camera. As a pocket P&S it is better.

excuse my ignorance, but is there such a carry-around lens maybe 14-55mm but with f/2.0 aperture.
is such a wait a helpless one coz there's no such lens, i'm seeing mostly f/3.5 lens as fastest ?

:dunno:

They will be releasing lens next year.
A tele-lens, a 35mm f1.4 CZ i hope and two more in 2011. More to come in 2012.

Here are the predicted lineup for the 7.

Wide angle, fixed focal length (Carl Zeiss) lens in 2011
Telephoto zoom lens in 2011
Macro lens in 2011
Portrait lens in 2011
High performance standard zoom G lens in 2012
Wide angle zoom lens in 2012
Middle telephoto lens in 2012

Thanks for the input. Yeah, it's probably not fair to compare the voigtlander to the 16mm pancake. Still even compared to my LX3, the distortions and artifacts and soft focus are hard to ignore. They could probably be user issues as you have mentioned. I might just go with the twin lens pack first and if that doesn't wet my appetite, then probably explore more lens options.

I'm also now re-evaluating the NX10, as someone reminded me why I initially fell in love with this camera. Frankly it feels better in my hand than the NEX which my wife would probably find more suitable.

Hmmm.... I am not convinced. If their A mount lens offerings are anything to go buy, add a couple more years to each of those dates.

16mm F2.8 , priced at 399 --- hard to get a zero distortion wide angle prime with all round sharpness from center to sides.

The kit lens on NEX are definitely not the best lens , but they arent that crap either for the price you pay for kit lens.

Biggest draw for me is that I mount RF lens on it , that changes the ball game entirely =D

seriously for chaps who cannot live with AF won't be convinced that the NEX lens won't be anything great.
For MF guys, NEX5 is simply fantastic.

hahah i am torn between a 35mm or 40mm f1.4 nokton. somemore my office so near to Chiff shop. heh

Which A mount lens are you refering to ???

I was caught by surprise with their recent trio release of their 24mm f/2.0, the 85mm f/2.8 and the 35mm DT f/1.8

ps: I go only with the official Sony news release and take with a pinch of salt the rumours from the usual rumours mill.

You'll be surprised that in recent years, Sony is the only one who has been keeping their promises and launching the products promptly.

How many DSLRs and lenses were launched this year alone is unthinkable.

Continue to be not convinced, Sony won't go bust because of that.

Value wise ,40mm 1.4 , probably the best bang for the buck. Potentially narrow but good for street shots.

the 5mm , may not justify the price difference.

I am considered the 1.1 Nokton though lol

2.8 is generally the fastest zoom, though I saw an olympus 14-35 f/2, for only 2000USD.

A good 2.8 will run you over a grand, but a used sigma can be had for quite cheap.

none of these lenses will autofucus on the nex, except the SAL2470Z 24-70 2.8 which is 1500 + 200 for the adapter.

wow must really have deep pocket for photography ....

I'm starting to consider if I shd just a LX5 which has a f/2.0 and enjoy it.
As per my earlier post, my main purpose is for low light shots. Initially thinking nex has a bigger sensor, it shd give brighter and sharper shots.
But when I do some shots at Sony style vs LX5, somehow I do not see this is true.

I may be wrong in this, or even my skill is not good enough. :dunno:

U can do an online search for comparisons .

Bigger sensor has no bearing on sharpness , details yes and better iso performance. You can shoot at 6400 with bearable noise. In that aspect noise control should be better than lx5.

Sharpness wise depends on lens and camera shake . Nex has no built in anti shake and the 16mm lens has no stabilizer as well.

Thanks for this enlightenment!!
How abt the 18-55mm lens, is there any stabilizer?
