Is tripod allowed to be hand carried in the airplane?

Can a carbon fibre tripod withstand the check in? That is, by itself and not stored within a luggage bag.

I would not risk it.. CF is strong and stiff but generally more brittle. It may Crack.

Erm.. Better not do that. You would rather put it inside a luggage bag at least.
Really.

Unless you want someone else took and sell it, ha ha! Try to put inside luggage bag la. I did so many times, even to Europe n back, still in a piece. Make sure got other stuffs acting as cushions around it.

Just asking. I got a manfrotto 190. Kind of heavy. So, I am thinking of getting a 2nd hand carbon fibre tripod for the trip. Lots of Sirui around. I am going to USA. There is an internal flight and there are some restrictions to luggage size.

Tripod aside, what about big bag for tele lens? Anyone got deny from hand carry a roller bag for tele lens (500mm-600mm type)? What I am thinking, if I been deny, I might as well use the bag for some items, dump the bag into a luggage bag (2 check in total) and check in. Then I sling my DSLR and tele lens into the plane with another bag or two (within their requirement). When reach designation, then transfer the setup back to the camera bag. When back from oversea, do the same thing, possible?

Tried once, taiwan with a Domke propack for my gear, and glad to say, no rejection. I don't have those big Prime Zooms, but the bag was full cos had milc + 18200,a99 + 2470, nifty 50,70300,video camera, laptop, and all the accessories, charger etc.

So far I only manage a a850 with grip, a7r with grip, 16-35 f2.8, 24-70 f4, video camera, 50mm, macro lens, time lapse device, laptop, 2 x ext hdd etc, ok to board. Now the concern is if I got the tele setup, I afraid another story if I board plane with a trolley bag that design for tele lens. Maybe ask when check in my luggage.

Yes Tele lens different story, cos that itself would be easily. Over 30cm..lol.. Do try and update!

Might know the answer in the future, lol! If I get a decent setup for Canada trip, I will know the answer. :D

So far hand carry to most part of asia without an issue. Only encounter i have is lithium battery. Apparently one should never check in lithium battery, especially to China

Taiwan is the problem.. Tripod can't be hand carried if longer than 30cm.. And yes China is super strict on check in lithium batteries.

Thanks

Never tried hk with tripod, but if I do bring my Tripod (cf tripod) it's in its own padded bag wrapped with my clothes in a hard case.

Correct, just sandwiched your tripod with clothing will be good enough. Tripod is hardy piece of equipment, should not damage with slight knock inside the luggage

Yup. It's fine to leave a removable lithium battery inside the camera if you are checking that in, but you'll have to keep all extra batteries in your carry on bag. Weird thing is that Guangzhou airport doesn't allow check in of laptops with or without batteries, Pudong is a little less strict. I would rate China's airport strictness as roughly equal to Taiwan, which is a good thing for air safety, but not so nice if you've brought lots of batteries for different camera bodies.

going out of the philippines, tripod will be a problem, but not going in.
