Forgive me, I noticed you singled out Singaporeans in particular. Obviously you have not been around the net much. Leeching is a universal problem. It's like the other thread about the flying lemurs where someone mentioned the culprits to be Chinese and another immediately assumed them to be PRC. It just speaks of a certain biasness, don't you think?
I don't blame you for noticing it.
I
know leeching is a universal problem but I don't see the need to name countries where I have observed it happening. It's also because I know it's a widespread problem that I also have fair reasons to suspect (but can't provide solid quantitative proof because I'm not doing a study/survey) that it tends to happen a lot in S'pore. (Just to let you know, I could be subconsciously comparing with western countries where I'm also participating/observing in their forums.)
It's S'poreans who created those 2 girlie websites which persistently 24/7/365 display leeched photos to their monetary gain. In case, you missed the point, they display other people's works without permission and draw huge visitorship to earn money. Where's the ethics in that? I have had a photographer-friend whose works had been leeched and displayed there but the webmaster totally ignored his request to remove images. That incident, which my friend eventually let go, due to the lack of ability in seeking legal action, slapped me in the face with the brutal reality that not every photographer has the means to sue.
Talking about sueing is cheap. (My words may sound harsh, but reality is just as harsh, and I'm only presenting it in all honesty, not because I have an itchy backside to become an unpopular figure here.)
Leeching (theft of intellectual property or copyright infringement) is shamefully rampant in Asia (including S'pore). The western world knows it, we Asians don't want to admit it. It says alot about us. The truth hurts (yea, we often don't wanna hear it).

I've always used my own avatar, but I think people generally accept that avatars are not necessarily the work of the person using it.
Oh, by the way, I hate to say this but this is a trend that is seen in forums world-wide, not just "here" wherever "here" is.
I assure you that I'm not only on S'pore-based ClubSnap, and I have also observed this trend in foreign-based forums to use avatars created by others. In my opinon, it's still leeching or abuse. It becomes crystal-clear if I were to take someone else's original image/illustration/emoticon and use it as my avatar.
Chill out everyone... I didn't ask anyone to admit whether their avatars were their own work. There's no need to admit/confess to anything. Shhh...
