Is the S5 Pro still a worthwhile buy?

The HyperUtility HS-V3 is compatible with Mac.

By the way, Adobe Lightroom 2.0 works well with Fujifilm RAF files too. In fact, a friend of mine and fellow CSer, Richard, switched to Lightroom 2.0 and prefers it over HyperUtility.

Here is his web article.

Thanks for the link. I ran into this site a while back too and there was an interesting analysis of the S5 on Richard's webpage. Reason why I'm looking into Hyperutility is because, being Fuji's own software, I've read that it's capable of pulling some of the best results out of the S5. Even if it is marginally worse off than Lightroom the advantage is the modest price. I'm not sure how much Lightroom costs, but surely it would be in excess of S$150.

If HS-V3 works perfectly with Mac (even the newer OS like the one I'm using), then I'll still be considering the S5. Otherwise it would make little sense to need a separate computer system just to process its files...or to pay the price of Lightroom.

hey i am using a mac too.. why not use photoshop & bridge?

Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Bridge cannot fully utilize the wide dynamic range and specific color data encoded within Fujifilm's RAF format. That's why you need Fujifilm HyperUtility HS-V3, SilkyPix Developer Studio 3.0 or Adobe Lightroom 2.0 (earlier versions will not work well).

Well I don't know what possessed me to buy a Mac laptop. At that time I just had over $3K flushed down the bowl after my Dell laptop failed with 3 years of use. I've always loved the underdog, so Mac was next on the list to try. Everything aside, I must say the external appearance of the Macbook won my heart over.

The education version costs S$149.

Wah, price is not bad at all. I thought all the Adobe stuff was wildly expensive. That said, Hyper Utility would still give me the ability to use the film simulation modes. If I am assuming right, this would be 'one-click actions' like the Picture Styles usable for Canon RAW files in Digital Photo Professional. I've always found this to be so convenient. At least one of the Picture Styles would work for me.

If they caused colors to be too unruly I'd simply leave it on Neutral and it was good as gold. I even downloaded additional Picture Styles lately and while they aren't as flexible as the base ones, they can work for a selected few images.

Still pondering what to get for myself for Christmas. Maybe the S5 Pro package? Or maybe a Canon 16-35L MKII? For wide angle I've read that the new Nikon 14-24mm is without equal, although it'd become a ho-hum wide angle zoom on the S5, behaving more like a 21-36mm lens. This may expand its shooting possibilities however and may make it mildly more 'walkaround'.

Nope... Not with Adobe Lightroom 2.0.

But you can download different film simulations from the web and it will still work.

Just get Lightroom 2.0/2.1 .Hyper utility is crap and it's really s..l..o.w..

I agree.

It is not the most user friendly software. Plus, it hogs your system if you don't have sufficient RAM in your computer.

I have Adobe Lightroom 2.0, SilkPix Developer Studio 3.0 and HyperUtility HS-V3 installed inside both my desktop and laptop.

I use different software for different images. For wedding shoots, I will use Lightroom. For landscapes, street scenes and portraiture, I will use HyperUtility. To generate beautiful JPEGs from RAF, I use SilkyPix. ;)

Hmm...I've got 2GB RAM. Not flashy-high, but certainly sufficient right? I'm so used to 'slow' that I might not mind the interface. The day I turn pro (which is probably never) may be the day I'd need more speed, but at that time I'll be able to justify buying higher-spec versions of everything I currently own.

But again, that's a 'never'. Might as well stick to my job as a vet. Not a fun job by any stretch, and it doesn't pay a heap, but it does help to put food on the table.

Looking at the Education version of Lightroom 2.0 I notice it's supposed to have the same contents as the full retail version but it's not allowed for commercial use. What exactly does this mean? I don't think there's someone peeping over your shoulder to make sure you don't use the education version for say, paid work.

I am using the education version at home and full-version at work. They work the same to me and I don't find anything missing. ;)

Goodness gracious!!

Ya.... Nothing much I can do.
