Is the S5 Pro still a worthwhile buy?

fuji's raw files maybe twice the size of other brands' raw files, but the amount of additional information that you can retrieve from the fuji raw is really amazing

Yap....

With the Fuji S5 Pro, there is no excuse for us to screw-up the exposure on a shot.

actuallu i am quite keen on the original MB D200 grip..if u have lobang let me know

Orient Photo still has some Nikon MB-D200 left. If unavailable, Stanley can order for you.

IOne gripe I has with fujifilm is the size of its raw files. Other 12meg raw files are so much smaller than fujifilm's raw.

You guys have seen my roast ducks image, and probably already noticed there are many dark areas in the background. Let me hereby unleash the true power of a RAF image captured by the Fujifilm SuperCCD SR.

Behold my friends!

Truepower.jpg

The highlights and shadows of this image are still intact even though the original image shows a much darker background. Technically, the Fujifilm SuperCCD SR is able to capture 11-stop of visual data, whereas most other DSLRs stop at 7-stop.

Other than good colors reproduction, this is another reason why I bought the S5 Pro.

i did several tests with s5 pro (25meg raw)

and later compared the results against nikon d3 (12meg raw):

Wow, the results really do speak a lot for themselves. Thanks for posting this up.

Or rather, the user can screw up the shot but the final result may still be more than acceptable after exposure correction.

need help :bsmilie:

i sold off many stuff
left with s5 + 85 + 18-70kit

but i need another body!
should i get another s5pro or D300 or D700?

i need good high ISO performance, speed wise s5 still can handle
but will miss fuji color. :dunno::think:

hey that is very interesting. As I own a D700 now I have always wondered about the DR of the D700 compared to the fujifilm s3pro which I used to own. even the D3 seems to be 2 stops worse than the s5pro.

u only tested the highlight end. Did u by any chance repeat the comparison with underexposure and then pushing the exposure back up?

I know that the DR of the s5pro is very high BUT that is no excuse for giving us 25meg files. There are only 12 meg of pixels in the s5pro sensor. There are also 12 meg of pixels in the D700 sensor. Both is 14 bit/pixel. yet almost all manufacturer implement some sort of lossless compression to reduce file size. Only fujifilm managed to BLOW up the raw file size by padding 2 extra useless bit I think.

It'd be difficult to prove that Fuji is padding an extra 2 BIT into the file when it is in reality only 12 BIT. In part it may be the 14 BIT processing that explains the increased DR. The DR of some of the newer Canon cameras for example is claimed to have increased with the coming of 14 BIT processing.

But indeed if the S5 employed some form of lossless compression in-camera it would be very handy. Space is cheap these days but if the camera needs to move smaller files from processor to card, it will probably improve performance somewhat.

?? I think fujifilm uses 2 bytes to store one pixel. so the raw file is around 24-25meg. 2 bytes is 16 bit. They advertise 14 bit ADC so I guess the remaining 2 bits is just left empty. I think someone in Dpreview actually analysed the raw files of s3pro and proved it.

Well I'm no good with bits and bytes. Interesting thought however. I only thought Fuji files may have been bigger because they were uncompressed TIFF files. Having said that, my 1Ds is not quite double the MP count of the S5, produces 12 BIT images and yet pulls out 16 BIT TiFF files at 63MB a piece. Rarely do I need to work with such large files however. It's usually a 11MB compressed RAW into the converter and a 10MB or so JPEG out the other end.

Just call ms today evening, and was informed S5 pro sold out. Have to wait for 4 weeks.:(
Anyone know where got stock?

I never need to shoot RAW with S5Pro.

OOC jpeg WB is spot on, no need to ps as well. Both my clients and my boss are very happy with the IQ.

Was at CP b4 they closed today, saw 1 happy buyer got hold of the last piece in store. Congrads & Happy shooting ;)

Cheers

Maybe shouldn't have posted this thread here. Sparked a flurry of S5 sales. Fuji would be happy but unfortunately people here also will miss out.

Aiyah.... Just shoot lah!

Leave the technical part to the engineers while we savy those 'delicious' images we have created. ;)

The 'beep' sound is turned off by default.

You can turn it on by SETUP > SYSTEM > BEEP > [HIGH]/[LOW].

A music note icon will appear on the camera's control panel.

For me, I have it remains [OFF] as the 'beep' sound is very annoying especially when shooting on streets.
