Is the S5 Pro still a worthwhile buy?

Hey bro fword, which shop did you go to, and whats the price for the kit?

For me is worth it....go to liang court they still have a good deal.:D

Some candid shots[/QUOTE]

Thanks for posting those up. In the first picture which is a night shot, did you do a handheld exposure at high ISO? Or was it a long exposure taken at lower ISO? Just interested to know how it handles noise with night shots. I'm guessing it was a short exposure based on the appearance of the water.

What's the price at Liang Court? Haven't been to that place in ages and didn't think they sold such stuff there.

Photobum, thanks for more of those great samples. I saw the 100% sharpening and the difference is quite stark even on a photo resized for viewing on screen. 500% still looks good of course but I gather there will be some sharpening artefacts when viewed at 100%.

Was all this sharpening done in Hyper Utility? If I get the S5 I'd need to debate if I should also get this software. I read that it includes the film simulation modes when converting RAW to JPG. If this is true then it's very useful indeed. The included RAW converter doesn't have the film simulation modes, I gather.

With Canon's free RAW converter they have Picture Styles and it's a similar idea. Extremely useful. Just takes one click and the user can select the style they like. The same sort of processing would otherwise take a number of steps in PS.

Hey man, the shop that I was thinking of buying from is in Australia, not Singapore. Ted's Camera. In the past when the AU$ was much higher than S$, everything looked much more expensive, so I always waited till I got to SG before buying any electronics. As you know the exchange rate has fallen since with the weakening of the AU$.

Considering that I'd be in Aussie most of the time (because I'm working here) it is beginning to make more sense for me to buy here so that I can have local warranty. At this shop, the price of the S5 and a Tamron 17-50/2.8 (plus a whole bunch of vouchers for discount printing supposedly worth $400) it costs about AU$1499. Body alone is AU$1199. I'm not very good at math, but the pricing makes the Tamron lens add-on look like a reasonable option.

hi sorry since we are on the topic on s5pro, would the s5pro will meter on my old Ai-s lenses?

also would the s5pro have the option to fine tune lenses like the D300? i am looking to upgrade to a s5Pro but i am torned between D300 and the S5pro. the D300's fine tune seem attractive but the DR for fuji *wow*

brand new at $1100 just the body??? where to get at tat price? :P mayeb i should ditch my d80 for it soon hee

Hey can someone post a shot without sharpening at 6 and 12 Megapixel, with DR set off and with DR at 200%, say? I was under the impression that part of the DR compromise one makes is that the image is softer. Thanks.

On page 2, post 31, there are two samples posted by Photobum, one with DR at 400% and the other at 230%. These are supposed to be 100% crops. I don't see any additional softness in the 400% shot and I suspect that increasing the DR does not do anything to sharpness directly but yields a lower contrast image.

Contrast can have an effect on perceived sharpness.

However I'd let the users of this camera comment further on this.

Does the S5pro have auto iso? like setting a min and max like D40?

Hi, may I know what do you mean by DR off with DR at 200%?

Thanks

Thank u bro.. anyone know the S5pro comes with what? Like what size CF card?

I m currently using D40 to shoot anything but seldom use the burst mode. Also having sigma 30mm f1.4 and 18-200mm VRII. The S5pro can use both lens right? I am still thinking should i see the D40 to get the S5pro or keep both after i get the S5pro?

Is the S5pro only good in portrait and human photo and lousy in landscape etc?

The S5 pro is good in every thing in my opinion. Landscape is definitely 1 of it. The S5 pro is a D200 body, so it can use all the above lens you mention. Trust me. Once you use the S5. I think you will not want to use the D40 anymore. That is what happen to my D2hs.

woah thank u very much. Do u know where can get OEM battery? The battery life is as D200 not good right? cheers:p

I managed to get around 500 shots on full battery with many at high ISO. Actually you can get OEM battery from many shops. Just ask around. I think eastgear also sell them though I will not encourage you to get OEM batteries

what about old lenses (ai-s) will they meter?? and fine tuning of the lens??

I am speaking out of experience. I am not a pro.

To date after using many dSLRs, my old S3 Pro gave me the least problem in terms of skin tone (other things aside). After looking at the pics from bros here taken using S5 Pro, I believe S5 Pro should be even better. In fact, I quite regretted selling my S3 Pro off. Now that this S5 Pro is going to be an endangered species, I have to dig $ from somewhere and get it.

I would say that what S5 Pro could produce is not something that everyone knows how to appreciate. How often do you really blow-out some areas in a picture and u must recover those? How important to u really are these blow-out sites? How important is the dynamic range to you actually?

To be frank, after shooting some wedding stuff, I admit, S3 Pro (i believe its the same, if not better for S5 Pro) really does wonders in terms of getting the slightly diff tones of white from the gown (for the black suit, i notice not so much, or is it just me). When i switch to use other brands even with their new processors (brand not mentioned), i PP until vomit blood also sometimes cannot get it right! I'll save the details. In short: the cameras I use now, just cannot match. There are many other things more important than pixels in a picture. The gradual tones, smoothness in the picture, film-like output, etc.

Some may say that its probably my skills that has problem. I admit, I am not very good. But in this situation, under the hands of the same person, using diff camera, can produce difference results. Clearly, Fujifilm camera must have something.

To me, S5 Pro is definitely a worthwhile buy. From the looks of it, u seem to know what u wanted in a camera. So I think u are the kind that will appreciate what it can produce. As for the newbies taking up this camera, seriously, think twice. With so many other camera in the market, see what u really want.

Just to be clearer.

I am not saying that other brands are no good. They have their advantages over S5 Pro.

After speaking to many people (some are pro) who "plays" with cameras, I realise not many people sees the benefits of using fuji sensors. It really depends what one is looking for in a picture.

When people think 'landscape' the common thought would be 'biting resolution', the ability to see every blade of grass, every leaf in that tree, the crevices in that mountain etc. In terms of what I've seen the S5 is certainly sharp enough although it doesn't seem to produce that clarity which I'm really looking for in a landscape image.

On the flip side however the huge DR is an obvious plus for me. If I didn't want to be fiddling around with an ND grad all the time (or just didn't have the time to do so) then the Fuji will save my butt. Rich tonality is something that is often mentioned also but unfortunately I can't rent an S5 to compare it with my current setup. Besides, different lenses will also render different results. I certainly can't use Leica lenses on an S5.

Well stated. When conditions are right and everything falls into place, all is good. But once large areas of blown highlight start to appear in a photo then it's a major annoyance. To my eye, large areas of featureless black is much more comfortable to look at than large areas of pure white, although with the right execution anything would work, really.

For the most part I do landscape/ travel work but really would like to do wildlife photography. But recently I've been doing more and more portraiture (courtesy of a number of my relatives getting engaged in quick succession). It was during an outdoor shoot that the blown-out highlights of the wedding gown really annoyed me.

And if I underexposed to preserve gown detail then the face and especially the eyes were way too dark. In this instance I opted to expose for the face and eyes and the gown suffered.

Interesting thing is that newer cameras are coming out with 14-bit processors and improved technology that is generally improving the DR of the sensors even in other brands. The question I think, is not a matter of 'if' but 'when' cameras of other brands will have sensors to match the DR of the Fuji, and this would be a bonus IMO, if I could obtain a Canon camera with equally wide DR, and I could keep all my lenses and flash.

So while the S5 looks like incredibly good value of money at this time (and even more so for a first camera buyer), I'm finding it difficult to justify a switch of an entire system for it. Although arguably if I did that, I'd pocket back a good deal of money that I can use for something else. Increasingly with photography I've gone with a 'downgrade plan' to save money. I've realized that I'm the primary limiting factor when it comes to picture-taking and in reality, almost all the gear out there is really good.

But downgrade past a certain point and I'd be hating those plastick-y looking cameras. :bsmilie:
