well just giving my 2 cents worth here.. I sold my D90 2 months back for the E-P1..

As a amateur, i find that i am constantly disappointed with what i produced from the D-90..(given its specs, Enormous weight, and price..) maybe partly because i m not too familiar with the camera yet..And ppl constantly expects you to take professional pictures simply because it looks so huge, it must be PRO.

After my switch to EP1, i have had so much fun with my photos..i can take my cam every where now, take pictures stress free, less intrusive too, for street candids.
And everyone's now amazed how this little cam can perform!

So yea, no regrets for the switch

zqpeh, thot u sold the Ep1 already? Dun get what u mean le. U replaced DSLR D90 with Pen but yet not satisfied with it & sold it off, somehow at the same time u like Ep1 still. What if the AF still not good enuf for EP2? Wud u be going back to DSLR? Or maybe a Panny GF1? Or wait for Ricoh & Sony to release their ver of mirrorless cams? While waiting no cam to use wor....

hello all, i am a total newbie to E-P1. just got mine yesterday. decided to go ahead and get E-P1 even though E-P2 will be available soon. but since i am a beginner, i think E-P1 should be sufficient.

hopefully, i can get some tips and join some outings here. can anyone advise if i should register for the Oly product workshop and do i need to register the warranty online?

Since you're new, apply for the workshop, applying the warrenty online gives you extra 3 months warrenty so why not?

thanks spidey89. is there only 1 type of flash (FL-14) available? i have yet to purchase flash.

for micro four thirds, only FL-14,but can use the four thirds flash FL-36R and FL-50R as well as Metz, still got others but not sure about it

I got the FL36 (not R) which works very well with the E-P1. Didn't get the FL14 due to its rather limited GN and lack of features like bounce for the price. I still use the E-P1 without any flash though.

Time to resurrect this thread again.....

To me, I have this sinking feeling that all my investments in my DSLR is going to be wasted. For the last few months, the EP1 is my take everywhere camera. My E3, E510 and E620, all in the cupboard now. Time to move them into the dry cabinet.

The saying .... the best camera is the camera that u carry with you....is really ringing through at a different level now.

To answer the question, it will not fully replace a DSLR, but it sure is replacing the DSLR as the camera that I carry.

As the PEN becomes more advanced...ie.faster in performance, it will slowly and surely make the DSLR obsolete, at least for prosumers like me. The only thing I dun see the PEN becoming, is weatherproofing.

I suspect it will take a while before they're comfortable for full time dSLR users. People who use SLR-like point-and-shoot cameras would probably be happy. Seeing the PMA notices, another electronics company has a mock up for a micro Four-Thirds like camera system.

to me e3 + ep2 is a nice combination..

I see you have an impressive collection of lens. Do you mind sharing under what circumstances you would use the E3 over your E-P2?

Thanks

For macro /birding / nite scene with high iso usage / product shot / street photography
= PEN

For taking wedding / events / F1 or japan GT cars / or anything that need fast AF then i will use E3

which means if i dont need fast AF to capture my subject then i will use PEN :):)

Great info.

Are you using those 4/3 lenses on your PEN? How is the experience so far?

I am surprised to hear that you use the PEN for high ISO/night scene over the E3, may I know why? Shouldn't the E-3 has better IQ for those situations?

Sorry about all these questions, I am trying to build my own camera system around E-P1 and E3 also .. just wanted to learn more before going ahead.

yeah i use 4/3 lens on EP1 ..cause i dont want to buy the panasonic m43 20mm f1.7 since i have the 4/3 25mm f1.4 already..

same goes to the tele side..i cant justify the extra price for the panasonic m43 since i have the 4/3 70-300 lens..

4/3 lens on Ep1 can AF but just the S-AF not C-AF. And the AF speed of Pana leica 25mm f1.4 on EP1 is much more faster than the original m43 kit lens..yeah strange but better believe it..

EP1 sensor and engine is far more advance compare to E3..
E3 is 3 year old already la...

but having say tat .,.90% of the time i just use PEN with 14-42 kit lens..enuff to cover a lot of stuff..

E-P1 is a good and capable camera but i doubt it can replace a good DSLR. I used it for about 8 months. Good to carry around and its my first "DSLR". I mainly use the camera to shoot animals and static objects. However i am put off with its slow AF(make me miss many shots) and high noise at iso800. In the end i got a 5D Mk2 to compliment my E-P1.

E-P1 is good in certain areas like portability and the 2 times crop factor. AF and high ISO is the cons of the E-P1 i suppose.

I just bought an E-PL1 for supplementing my DSLR. In answer to TS question, the answer is
DEPENDS. ( Isn't it always :-) )
For me, I use my DSLR for weddings, graduations and shooting my fast moving kid at home. But the E-PL1 is the perfect companion for work/travel, dinner shots with friends. It has even rekindled my passion for street photography! And it acts as back up to my DSLR for important occassions (my shutter died in the middle of a shoot recently). An important reason i got it is also for the HD video capability which shouldnt be overlooked. These m43 cameras can produce some glorious video!
So in my case at least, the answer is in fact NO. It doesn't replace my DSLR but it does supplement my setup and expands my options. The thing to remember is - not one camera can do everything you want. Not that i know of anyway :)

As for me, i am planning to sell my canon 450D to get either a Lumix GF1 or E-PL1. Reason being is because i under uterlise my DSLR maybe its because of its size. I think as off now, m 4/3 or 4/3 cant replace DSLR because the limited range of lense.

m4/3 I belive was never meant to replace DSLR,but I beg to defer on the 4/3 not replacing DSLR,firstly, its a DSLR,plus, the lens available are more than enough for quite a number, how many lenses do you need? 70-200 got 2 f4s and 2 f2.8s each of them one version has IS,totaling 4,whats the point? That is just one example, 4/3s more or less is complete, just lack of primes which doesn't bother me

I recently purchased the e-pl1 and I think it will become my primary compact lightweight travel rig...I own a rather large Nikon system and the M4/3 will complement that system well...I can get one body, several lenses,a couple of extra batteries, a charger, and some flashes into a very compact bag. I just love it for the size and weight reduction, along with its excellent image renderation.

I will still keep my extensive Nikon system for its ruggedness and reliability.

Cheers

I just purchased an E-PL1 at MS colours for $920 (Single lens kit)!!! Excited about it. I was advised to buy a UV filter at $15 and I did. I hope this UV filter doesn't degrade the photos in anyway !;)
