Is the M5 the camera to watch in 2016?

Granted that the EOS 80D is a great camera for video, (perhaps more so than the 5Dmark4)
The new canon M5 is also an attractive piece of gear for 'b-rolling' given the smaller size, Dual pixel AF, tilt screen, EVF and electronic IBIS

Looks like Canon's back in the mirrorless game!
Quite atypical of Canon to allow EVF and focus peaking in their non cinema line AND (e)IBIS to boot.
Given the long refresh time for Canon product line, this is going to be as good as its gets for the next few years.
EOS M5 could herald in more sales of M series and EF lenses. Video shooters who have been holding out for a autofocus system that works before committing to system lenses can now bite the bullet. I doubt Canon will introduce fast EOS M lenses any time soon because they will be no smaller than their APS-C EF cousins. New USM EF lenses are also approaching EOS M size.
It will be interesting to see if Canon will decide to kill off one mount over another.

Having left out 4K makes even the hardcore fans jump over to Sony.

I have been using the A7s for 2 years now and I'm excited to let the M5 take over daytime duties.
Sony for some reason is adamantly against touchscreen and that negates any improvement it is making in video AF.
Case in point: The A6300 face detect is great and its continuous tracking is quite reliable. But setting AF point is very painful without a touchscreen.
Canon's Dual Pixel AF with touchscreen AF selection can potentially replace the AC and is breathing new life into older USM lenses.
AF and touch-to-focus turns the M5 into a camcorder of sorts - complete with EVF, touchscreen and focus peaking.

+1. Sony should be more equipped than any of the other camera manufacturers since they also make smartphones/tablets, etc. They have access to all the tech in house for sure. Think they could do it with their eyes closed if they wanted. Haha. Really hoping they take a good hard look at how much of the competition has already implemented this and move on this by next year. Really no excuse. Also wishing for a fully-articulated LCD from them...

And a firmware update to address some really pointless menu/UI limitations. For example, certain frequently used functions can't be mapped to custom buttons, requiring one to menu dive. Unable to create custom menu for frequently used options, etc. Talking about the a7rii in particular. Selecting APS-C mode to FF mode requires at least 3-4 button presses.

Is it just me or does anyone paste menu cheatsheets on their A7X bodies? hahaha!

Mine says: Box5:Format
Gear5: APS-C
Cam1:Codec
Cam2:FPS

Haha, I think it's just you! Paste where? Under the flip LCD? I have those two (format and crop/ff mode) sorta memorized with enough repetition.

Bingo! Behind the LCD right under the EVF.

What I like and dislike about shooting video with the M5 after a few use:

PROS:
1.Enhanced Image Stabilization Mode. Uses electronic IS but it allows you to handhold IS lenses without microjitters. (PS: IS does not work with manual lenses)
2. EVF. Very very sharp. Can be trusted for fine focusing. Can assign manual toggle between EVF and LCD
3. Focus Peaking. accurate and unobtrusive
4. Touch and Drag AF. Say bye bye to follow focus. But does not work well in poor light
5. Face tracking. Good until about 70 degree off axis. Works in poor light too.
6. Touchscreen control for exposure parameters. ISO, Shutter, Iris buttons are always displayed on screen for quiet adjustment without rotating clicky dials.
7. Much better battery life than sony.
8. customisable picture profiles

CONS:

1. In video mode, magnified focusing tool only works with M lenses.
But magnifier works with any lens in other modes. Magnifier does not work during recording.
2. No headphone port.
3. Audio levels are displayed on a black menu page instead of the main LCD screen.
4. Battery hatch is blocked by most tripod plate
5. Video record button is even more awkward than Sony. Impossible to shoot with one hand.
6. Noisy after ISO 3200.
