Is it true tat RF is only good for SS? PLs enlighten mi... thxs... :)

slightly over a week since i got my set, i realized the answer.

YES it is exceptionally good because of it's "stealth" which will not intimidate your subjects... well, for that matter if you compare the looks on them when you pop your SLRs out.

That, of cos you can achive the same with any small cameras which are capable of focusing manually. this would allow you to preset your focus zones and your other settings will come side by side.

Personally, i got the rangefinder as an excuse to start 35mm negatives. I also quickly realised that i am standing on quicksand, it sucked a whole lot out of me!

NOW GO GET YOURSELF A RANGEFINDER! :bsmilie:

Rangefinders are also excellent for portraitures (not those pretty girl model type). You'll have a direct connection with the subject if you shoot with both eyes open, whereas if you use a dSLR, it covers up your entire face. You can also "see" the exact moment the shot is taken at and capture moments when your subject feels completely relaxed at that split-second moment.

Other than street/journalistic photography and portraitures, dSLRs would be on par or better than rangefinders.

Agree with Yoricko on the benefits of rangefinders with street photography.

In terms of not being intimidating while shooting in the streets, I realised that old film SLRs like the Nikon FM series and Canon AE1 line would also do the trick. Not sure if it is just me, but I notice that people tend to be amused when they see me use my Nikon FM2n.

Dejected, for you, I think when people see your rangefinder, they would go  no time go be intimidated ;p

I shoot with both eye open when using Dslr with MF lens... Maybe its a habit pickup when I am doing macro...

So to say it more suitable for street photographic rather than portrait... Can I put it tat way?:)

to shoot with both eyes open u need an almost or 1:1 view finder otherwise i seriously doubt anyone could pull that off :)

some options for that would be:

Viogtlander R4 (A/M)
Leica MP
Leica M6 TTL 0.82? :dunno:

Would you prefer the viewfinder more to the left of the camera?

M6 x0.85 you meant?
Ordered a x1.25 viewfinder magnifier so my Leica M4-2 with a x0.72 viewfinder turns into a x0.90.
Waiting for mail...

Even a 2nd hand LUx or corn it it will cost 2 to 3 k at least...

There are apparently a few models of M6.

One of the M6 does come originally with x0.85 view finder.

following extracted from http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/cameras/leica_m6.shtml

The big news is that M Leicas now come with three different magnification viewfinders: .58, .72 and .85. The latest is the .58 and this is ideal for use with wide angle lenses, which of course is where an M Leica excels. This is the model that I bought, and it matches the Tri-Elmar with its 28-35-50mm coverage perfectly. The 28mm frame can now be seen even when wearing glasses, and the 35mm frame sits alone without distracting additional long-lens frame lines cluttering the viewfinder. What more could one want?

If you buy cosmetically worn out ones with good condition glass, you can get it cheap.
I've seen 50mm crons going for SGD~950 from reputable eBay dealers.

CV 50mm ƒ1.5 Nokton is only ~SGD500 (new).

2h crons should not hit the 2k mark, unless it's one of the old / limited edition black paints!!

there are also alternatives that are cheaper and some ppl claim / praise to be just as good, if not better - zeiss planar or konica hexanon.

:o Konica Hexanon!!! i wan i wan i wan!!!
