IS on lens

No argument with kids

With no evidence whatsoever to support your baseless claims...

From the well regarded DPReview site in their review of the 18-55 IS kit lens:

"We tested the IS system at both the long and short ends of the zoom range in our standard studio test...

The results here a generally similar to those we obtained with the 17-85mm IS, confirming the effectiveness of Canon's new simplified image stabilization unit. At 18mm and a shutter speed of 1/6 sec, IS is delivering 50% critically sharp shots, compared to just 10% without. Even at the very slow shutter speed of 0.3 sec, IS is giving usable images with no more than mild blur 70% of the time; we obtained none whatsoever with it switched off.

Performance is just as good at the telephoto end; at 1/25 sec, IS gives 80% sharp images in contrast to 20% sharp without IS; and at 1/6 sec, 80% of images are usable with IS turned on, in comparison to none at all with it turned off. Overall the optical image stabilization genuinely does confer a very useful advantage when handholding the camera."

No argument with arrogant ignorant recalcitrant old farts.

Thanks for all advice and input.

Yes, I'm still on the learning curve and seniors here has given me good inputs , and advice on brushing my skills and knowledge.

My Sony Alpha was very basic len set and Sony len selection is limited !! ( Sad !! ), that's why I've moved to an advance camera .

I'm currently scouting for 70-200mm L USM lens either used or new . My wife's idea is since I'm interested in photography, might as well spent my funds wisely and selecting good lens and regret buying lower end lens. ( basically double spending and not short changing my dream lens )

Think u should get a 70-200 mm L F4 with IS... unless u are planning to use your lens mostly in bright sunlight... :-D U can trust L lens IS capability... ;)

Most people worry too much about their equipment. I would suggest holding off the purchase and see what you are shooting and take it from there. I see that you have spent quite a good bit of money on the alpha system already, why don't you run along with it and see how far it can take you?

It is always better to spend your time and money taking better photographs, not on buying more cameras and lenses. And to be honest, if your skill is not there, it doesn't matter even if you use a Leica or a Holga.

If you are changing set then maybe your first canon lens should be something of shorter focal length? If you have at least a 18-55 kit lens then 70-200 would be a good add on. Otherwise I would suggest getting something around 18-55 rfocal length range for general purpose (unless you know that you only need 70mm onwards).

Do a search on the forum, there has been discussion between 70-200 f2.8 vs f4 vs f4 IS (of course if you have $$ and weight is not issue then 70-200 f2.8 mk II would be nice) which may help you decide if you need IS or not.

End of the day my opinion is that at shorter focal length, having IS is a bonus, may not be crucial that's why canon's prime lens don't have IS at shorter focal length. However if you are talking about telephoto or super telephoto this 'bonus' would be more valuable. I am using 300mm f4 non is, still possible to get good shots under good lighting using handheld but the % of keepers' shot would be lesser than one with IS i assume. But again I prefer to bring along a monopod as a cheaper alternative to 'IS' haha.

Not sure but can your body switch off the IS function? If can then do try it out and see if you can survive without IS or not.

Thank for your advice Bro .

One of the main reason I changed my alpha is I felt the camera is rather "basic" ( especially len option ) , and had recently sold my gear .

I've recently in our inter-internal-national-company compitition won 1st and 2nd and those pictures were posted and used as our companies calender .... ( sorry to show off ) . Still trying to post picture here for comments, but is restricted ??

Anyhow, I'm still new in this hobby, and would like to learn more .

My plan is to aquire 2 lenses ,

1. Tamron SP AF28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical IF Lens
2. Canon 70-200 f4 ( using tripod / Monopod shooting option ?? )

Initially my plan was for a 18-270 ( Tamron ) walkabout lens , but was detered having such wide focal range in 1 lens , which should see some distortion on it's zoom range .

Yes, my deam is to own 70-200 f2.8 , but due to total weight +/-2kg ( lens -1.4kg + body +/-650g) , and not forgeting my CFO restriction ( >$2k spending on lens )

I've also found M'ysia 60D only cost RM3k ( nego ), but the hindside, no warranty . Wonder if their lenses are cheaper as well ?

Anyhow, still searching for my len ( new or pre-owned ) quickly, as my body is sitting in my dry box waiting patiently to marry this lens.

I find Tamron 28-75 really tight for cropped sensor... Hence I sold it and get a 24-105 mm instead... Why not u just get 24-105 instead of the 2 lens u mention? It is reasonably wide and a bit tele as well... :-D

Do you know who carries most Tamron in S'pore . I've not seen this on DD Ele.... web site .

And if you could PM me the prices, thanks

Take a look at the BnS section, you may get good lens at reasonable price. Unless you have big pocket to spend, otherwise, it is more practical to get some used lens because the price is already much cheaper and even if you decide to sell away next time, the loss is much lower.

I do not have good experience with Tamron lens due to the focusing speed so I always try to avoid getting this brand's lenses.

Very seldom will the other non-photographically inclined half make such a statement ;)

( I am an N and C user ) actually unless you are looking at very specific subset of lenses, Sony has quite a nice array of lenses for most users.

Anyhow, IS/VR or whatever you call it is pretty useful in situations that require it. I loved the stabilisation my 70-200 gives at the tele end of things.

I've checked B&S section on several used lens, and most would say "no Dust " etc.... but I ended up in disappointment on closer inspection , with dust speck inside lens.

Looks like I'll be purchasing new lens, after wife suggest I should consider new, as the time I spent visiting used lens owner is costing me time and money .

It's always good to have my other half support my hobbies .

Yes, my other half is very supportive of my hobby.

Anyway, I'll be buying new lens and without IS but L series . I'll just need to pack my Monpod with me all times when I take this lens out.

Bro, this lens I've bought is F4 fixed throughout it's focal length len, even for 70-200mm L zoom lens, it's F4 all the way.

Check and double checked before I made my purchase .

Anyway, thank you for your comments !

don't seem like a question to ask since you were previously an alpha user.
f4 means it's the largest aperture the lens can go, of cause you can change it to f5.6, f8, f16 etc.

I suggest you brush up on your basics before making any purchases.

carry monopod all the time?
if you find yourself always shooting at slow shutter speeds, then that might be a good choice for you.

It's quite common to have some dust inside the lens... even new one.

There is nothing wrong with wdEvA answer base on your earlier question. The F4 mean that the largest aperture is a constant F4 from throughout the zoom range (70mm to 200mm in this case) and of course, you can change to a smaller aperture (f5.6, f8, f11 & etc) like any other lens to get more depth of field if you need to.

Have a nice day.

F4 is the widest aperture you can go throughout the 70-200mm focal length luh.

if you need DOF, you still stop down to small aperture luh.

Why no warranty? Grey set? Or just that warranty not honoured in Singapore? If latter, then I feel that it is not a big problem. In the unlikely event that your camera needs service during the warranty period, just bring it back there. If you worry about the hassle and cost, then get it from JB instead of farther away like KL or Penang.
