Is my Nikon D5000 a great camera?

my sis in law has a new D90. though i like the cam due to its high resolution lcd, hand grip is better than my unit, can AF old lenses, but i find it not worthy of an upgrade to the D5000. i do take note that these 2 Nikon DSLRs belong to the same class, the Mid-Range Level. (dont argue that D90 is a semi pro) if ever i will upgrade, it would be higher than the class of these 2; maybe D300, 300S or Canon 50D, 7D.

i also take note that D90 has the same sensor, pixel, and almost (frames per second) with my D5000. the big and noticeable difference is the price gap

Plus a host of other features like CLS, 2 dials, top LCD which may not be what everyone need.

Hmm based on what i know is that D5k uses D90 sensor, D90 sensor build is the same as D3(except D3 is a full frame which sensor is larger) so enjoy your D5k, no point getting super fast AF if yr not shooting sports, wildlife. If yr shooting kids and stuff, just time yr shots will do.

there's one, the 50mm f/1.4G. it has a built in AF motor but it is a very pricey one, around 4 times the price of 50mm f1.8.

but if you dont mind, the 50mm 1.8 is already a very good prime lens. the only difference you get is the AF motor and the build quality. the aperture is just a slight difference but the photo quality is SUPERB!!! isnt that what a photographer looking for???

NOTE: this is a good upgrade to your kit lens 18-55mm VR. good for weddings. what makes this special is its wide angle coverage plus its tele zoom coverage (in one package). though it prices almost the same as the more popular 18-200mm VR, which has a far zoom end, but this 18-200mm suffers so strong to geometric barrel distortions and CA's.

If you have shot weddings, you will know. ;p 17-55/2.8 would be better.

i 2nd this. Faster lens(in addition to WA) is more useful during wedding. (I have not shot wedding, just contribute my opinion as hobbyist at wedding dinners)

But need to watch out putting people at the edges/corners at 17mm end. The distortion can be quite unflattering.

Yupz, the D5000 cannot auto focus during video taking. It can only focus before you start taking video. Therefore I don't really think video taking is useful for this cam..

I found another benefit from D5000's swivel LCD. It give you some additional allowance for your nose when you flip down the LCD. no oily LCD for me as the LCD is always below when I taking pics....just need to be careful not to knock the protruding LCD against hard surfaces..

yes, it really wont. but actually you can unlock its trick....Jeff Revell says, then use the manual focus. change your lens from Auto to Manual.

remember, you bought a DSLR, not a camcorder or a video camera. when we buy a camera, we didnt buy it because of its freebies but of the camera itself.

i have tried the manual focus on video and it really works....!!!

Btw ask you D5000 users, there is one part on the body when u press, it will produce a "sqee" "sqee" sound like hollow inside. Below the lens, left side, where the assist lamp is all the way down that part.

Is it common for D5000?

hmmm...strange huh but i only hear that "squee...squee" sound when im in live view as i half press the shutter button to get autofocus...i think its normal. if not, is your D5000 still in warranty? if so, then go to the service centre and have it checked i read in the manual that to maintain the optimum performance of the camera have it serviced 2x a year. i bought mine last Dec but still haven't serviced yet. i might go within this week.

though i dont see any disturbing effects yet on my photos...have yours serviced. anyway its free, if its still under warranty...

at the 85mm focal range the bokeh is good. photozone rated it far better than the 17-55mm though im not saying that the latter is not good.

what i mean here is that why settle for a very expensive lens if you can achieve it with a cheaper lens. i would say, dont go for the "macho effect" of the lens but look for its performance and photo quality. i have printed photos from my 18-55mm VR and wow their already very good considering its a way cheaper and smaller aperture lens than the 17-55mm.

if bokeh or shallow depth of field is what we are after then the 50mm f/1.8 is the cheapest in the group with superb sharpness.

Well...that area we dun usually will touch, since its below the lens there... i just happen to press it...haha...

If still not sure, just anyhow press near the lens bottom area and see if you can feel any diff bo. haha

Well, could it be due to the :bigeyes:"Air-Flow" feature related to their "Dust-Sensor-Cleaning"-thingzz??:think:?:dunno:?

Btw, I've tried mine this morning and I just couldn't detect any "sqee-sqee" sound from down there and was very sure my hifi/tv wasn't ON at that moment

So what is what or which is which? Got "sound" ok or No "sound" is ok?? Who'ssuppose to go NSC for a "check-up"??
