Is it really a good idea collecting all D90/D7000 posts into one thread?

Don't know if it is appropriate to post it here.

My question is, is it really a good idea collecting all posts related to a particular camera into one thread?

I myself am using D90, and wish to read more about certain particular aspects of the camera. However, I constantly find that the huge threads here (D90 user group thread I, II, III, IV...) is just overwhelming. It would take hours to browse over it to find something particularly interesting to me, during which I probably would give up at certain point. There is just too much information mixed together, let alone those OT posts.

I assume many others (except for those who are constantly following the discussion in the thread, among whom newbie like me is definitely not one) would feel the same way. If you do, please second me here.

So, I propose to stop the practice of making a HUGE D90 related thread, but rather, if you have a new thing to discuss, simply start a new thread. Just tag it appropriately so that it will be easier to find through the searching function, and will not mess the forum.

do you prefer to find all answers in one place, or all over the place?

I understand reading the OT post in equipment discussion thread is really pain in the a$$, if don't want to let the thread degraded like TCSS KPT thread and get locked, please refrain from making OT posts, those who guilty of that please delete your own OT posts, or can report OT posts by others and I will try help to clear up.

A lot of the posts are just new users of the DSLR announcing their induction into the group, along with the welcoming posts for their induction. Should we "ban" all these and let the newbies find their way to channel their initial enthusiasm elsewhere? Also, there will be times where the same question gets posted multiple times by new users coming in at different times, as well as responses too. There are reminders as well to prevent OTs, to read up their manuals, etc etc, are these also OTs?

No doubt I'm guilty of a few OT posts (probably as an effort to make the communication less cold and to inject more warmth into the forum, is that also considered as Banal?) - btw, I've taken the liberty to remove those myself as well.

These DSLR specific forums here are by no means "perfect" and probably very hard to manage and to keep everything OT out of the group. The forum is by no means a technical manual with index and such, where you can just browse and find everything you need instantly... if one seeks such a help, then it is always advisable to read up the manual and do a bit of research on their own first. One should also try to tune in to the group as frequently as one could afford the time so as not to miss out anything. Even if you do miss something, too bad I suppose, it is not as if we'd not miss out anything ourselves as well. Otherwise, by the time this group hits the 100th thread, who's to say that one would actually bother reading all that posts? And really, what is the SEARCH for?

Note that I'm trying to address the issue. And I trust the "brothers-in-arms" of the D90 group are trying their best to keep OT out of it as well.

one suggestion for you guys is can have a consolidate FAQ thread for particular model of camera, so can mark it as sticky thread.

Too many Stickies not good.

Anyway I have stress many a time on OT and also long thread. And this is what I am getting at.

Members here must self moderate and also if their thread got deleted or lock because of OT etc, there is no need to take it personal and make a big scene and hooha (it happened before with a few members)

Good that the TS has bring this out.

BTW I am moving this to FAQ/Feedback section.

How about split them into categories, like technical and non-technical?
Too many posts asking pricing and where to buy.

Technical in

Non Technical Out in consumer corner or kopitiam

That has been the case all the time for that section.

Of course there are some exceptions ie ClubSNAP sanction activities in that section, and new products where we allow some slacks. But after which we will close the thread after some time.

Yes, agree with too many sticky thread is no good, it will not serve the purpose of sticky threads.

it will be good that members do some basic search before posting questions, some time the answers are already available right in front of them.

for where to buy and for price checking information, are belong to Consumers Corner, anyway, we do have a Price Guides available, and we encourage members help to contribute latest price for keeping the price guild updated.

a technical discussion thread have too many OT post is useless, so for users wish to connect to each others, chit-chatting, can go to KPT to start a thread.

hope this help.

1) I like catchlights' idea of some consolidated FAQ thread
2) I agree that having every one of those FAQ threads made a 'sticky' would defeat the purpose... there would be too many sticky threads :)
3) I feel that it's a bit unavoidable for people with a particular camera (eg. D90/D300s), especially fairly new members, to seek out the particular 'user group' thread and go "hi! I just bought my ____" to which there would be some "welcome to the group" replies. Just makes it a warmer environment and not so cold and matter-of-fact, like going to a library/hospital.
How to strike that fine balance is the issue I guess.

it will be good if we have a FAQ thread for each models of camera, lenses or flash or even batteries, and all these FAQ threads will be linked inside a sticky "Nikon FAQ threads".

this task is enormous, will need many members' help to compile each Nikon's Gears FAQ threads. Perhaps we can start small first, one or a few members taking up one topic to start compile a FAQ thread?

I am game to start with D80/D90, though by no means am I an expert in this product.
Will compile on my desktop first then only when the list is more complete, will I start a thread on D80/D90 FAQs.

Great, looking forward to see the D80/D90 FAQ/Guild. Many thanks. :D

Oh, the word 'guild' sounds nice... :)

Anyone starting a D7000?

nobody really knows enough about the camera yet, apart from reviews on websites.
Wait till someone starts a 'd7000 users thread', then can 'arrow' people! :) I am looking forward to reading the D7000 FAQ thread too. This camera is on my radar.
