Hi,

I will be flying to NY next week, do you guys think if it will be cheaper to get lens from there?
If yes any advise where to find it?
Going to spend Christmas there :( (away from family).

Look at current prices here and since you're going there anyway, if cheap, buy lor..... B&H, Adorama are just some of the reputable ones. Have fun there man.

If you buy from their shops in NYC, you need to pay New York Taxes on top of the price in their website

Both B&H & Adorama are in mid-town Manhattan. You can plan half a day to visit the two stores. They are relatively close to each other. Plus, NYC taxi is not expensive if you don't want to walk. B&H is just next to US Postal Office and should have the biggest floor space dedicated to photography gears.

Always do your homework on the items you are interested before going there. This way, you know whether it is worth the trouble getting the stuff there.

Remember you have to add NYC state tax (8.375%) IIRC if you buy stuff from the stores there. USA does not have tax refund for tourists.

One last thing: Canon USA has instant rebates going on now. Can check Canon USA for more detail.

Buy and get it ship out of the state and you don't get tax. Shipping is free when ship within USA.

Thank you guys. Will check those shops.

Yeah, that is the best option. If TS is planning to visit more than one state, he can place order in advance and ask them to ship the items out on a particular date. Even if you stay in a hotel, you can ask the hotel to hold your package until you arrive.

I have done this before but you will take a risk if the package was delay for whatever reason.

If B&H, check website before you go. This shop is Jewish-owned so they observe a lot of their own festivals, holidays (eg Yom Kippor), rest days etc. which means they can be closed whilst the rest of NY are open. Good to check website/call before you go. In any event, they close from Friday afternoon and the whole of Saturday for Sabbath. I forgot to check a couple of times when I was there and ended up twice standing in from of a closed shop - with many other visitors!!

Enjoy your trip.

If you are in NYC, schedule half a day to visit both B&H and Adorama. B&H will have a larger floor space but last time I was there, I was able to get something from Adorama that B&H has no stock.

Make sure you check out their opening hours ahead of time. They close on Friday afternoon and whole day Saturdays plus the Jewish holidays.

Are you planning a trip over? I just got back from 12 days in Manhattan and visited B&H and Adorama. I think they are both owned by the same family but are competitors (I was told). Not sure how true but they are both Jewish owned and run. B&H is huge and a very busy place - especially on Sundays - with the biggest range of photographic stuff I've ever seen. I saw all the familiar brand names but loads more models in each range than I was aware of. Check out B&H's used section if/while you are there. They had tons of very new looking camera bags and tripods but all at much lower prices. And you can get a copies of their enormous complete catalogues FOC.

Adorama is much smaller but still bigger than anything in Singapore. However, Singapore has many smaller shops in a much smaller area.

I wish I had taken the opportunity to get my 200mm f2 while I was there. I only decided to buy when I got back (dumb, huh?). Still, there's less tax to pay and a saving of at least $1000/- when everything is included.

Hello Helen

Glad to have this chance to talk to you. I've been trying for several days to access Adorama's web site but for me it is so slow and unreliable as to be unusable. I was hoping to check out your price for a new Canon 200mm f2 L IS USM.

Whenever this happens, my first assumption is that the problem is at my end but after trying several PCs on different connections, the result was no better. There doesn't seem to be any problem with any other web sites at the moment. Is there any technical difficulty with the site right now?

Regards

Trevor

Yeah, there are different queues in different sections inside the store. Take a queue no. and stand in line to wait for a customer service rep. to serve you. I would suggest J3:16 do the same. :bsmilie:

The one that is FOC is the old catalogue. I got the 2007 version when I was there earlier this year. For the latest one, you have to pay for it.

There are no problems that I'm aware of, but if you email me directly: helen.oster@adoramacamera.com, with your IP address, I can get it checked out for you.

oh btw, NY sales tax is 8.875, not 8.375, if that makes a difference.

I m currently in NY and you can pm me if u have any questions since i study here!

has anyone tried to buy camera's in the state and have it vpost'ed to singapore. some camera prices in the net are pretty tempting. will i likely have problems with voltage/plug type/warranty?
