is it a bad decission? D90 to LX3

just a couple of months back i was in the same dilemma as you. i had a D90 and a couple of lenses. problem was, i rarely went out due to the weight of all the gear i needed to carry. :sweat: perhaps i'm not as patient & wise as the others. :dunno: finally, i sold all my stuff & got myself a GF1. of course it doesn't have all the bells & whistles of the D90 but i'm very happy & satisfied with it. i now find myself shooting more, having it with me most of the time. as a newbie, i'm happy with making the most out of my panny while learning & see from here. i guess getting an LX3 won't be much different. it's just a matter of weighing what you want to learn now & see how you can do it with your camera of choice. like what i've read in the forum, the best camera is what you bring with you! :thumbsup:

I do the same too (without the camcorder) but my Panasonic FX8 is really outdated.
I'm looking at getting either a E-P2 or the LX3 but I feel that if I do that, I might not be bringing my more expensive setup out anymore and thus be "wasting it".
But to the TS; if you can afford it, own everything you want!
are you sure prosumer compact camera (e.g. LX3, G11....) are easier to use than your D90?
you will be surprised.

Well, not so sure about it yet but I think to explore a compact camera chances will be higher then a Heavy, big DSLR camera....as I can bring it with me all days in my bag and I can try on anywhere, anytime...as days goes I should be able to pick the skills.
D90 will still be with me at the moment....
=.=... just took out to shoot some insects but...cant stand it...insect is at a level above me...I try to near it (Macro)... my hand, arm already shakes like......=.=

sounds like your mind is all set to go for a compact camera.
stop torturing yourself by holding something you despise, go buy one compact and start enjoy :sweatsm:

i sold my nikon dslr for GF1 too. i dont have to carry a big bag around anymore, just a crumpler bag with GF1 + dual lens, perfect for me.
Use a tripod then? :dunno:

I don't see why you need a GF1 when D90 is portable enough for you to do that. :bsmilie:
I think I get what you mean though. Taking photos become a chore as the weight adds up. Shooting was so much less tedious before I upgraded. I'm considering a LX3 or S90 as a viable alternative to bring along for a holiday I'm planning. As the trip involves a lot of walking, lugging a D700 + 3 other full frame lenses might not be a good idea for most people (and sadly me too).
You mean with the 55-200? The 18-55 might be a more useful range for most other people but D50 + either lens is indeed pretty lightweight.
I sold all my SLRs (3 systems) and bought a GF1. I have probably shot more often these 3 months than the last 3 years combined because it is so easy to walk around even with 3 lenses. I have an LX2 but the pix quality is nowhere near the GF1 (when enlarged) so I hardly use now unless I absolutely have to.
If I were you I would sell the D90 as you can now still get a good price, and get a GF1/EP-1, -2. If you still need a DSLR, you can always buy later, and the latest models. If m4/3 camera is still too cumbersome, then buy a high end compact then. And high end compacts are not necessarily less complicated than a DSLR.
DSLR bodies depreciate very quickly, while lenses depreciate much less, so you may want to keep your Nikon lenses if you cannot get a good resale price.

when i first shifted to the d40, even though it has the most user friendly menu, i still have some difficulty coping with it until i chance upon krw user guide.
perhaps i'm more used to panny interface so i kinda feel that my lx3 is still easier to use than my d40.

when i started out and still didn't know how to take pictures.. i also chased dslrs. felt really good to own the latest. but after a while, the burden of thoughtless shooting and poor discipline landed me with tonnes of useless shots which i had to deleeettte. waste time!
then recently, i rediscovered an old film slr in the recesses of my house, and also spent USD 20 bucks investing in an old russian rangefinder. I shoot with a slow handphone camera these days too.
And i realised that my approach to shooting is very different. And it is really a joy to go out shooting again. partly because of the cost of film, it takes a bit more thought to compose pictures, and in that itself, perhaps, the pictures are more yours than the would otherwise be. Partly also because you can't review immediately, and there is the fun of anticipation. And also because these cameras are much lighter than the high-tech counterparts, perhaps it is possible to make slightly more spontaneous pictures.
and from the looks of it, you do seem like the kind of photographer who would like this sort of thing. something easier to carry, easier to use. haha won't regret lah.
