is D5000 + SB-600 suitable for Wedding shoot?

really think a f2.8 lens is needed for wedding...just to share, I attended a friend's wedding and the pg used a D300s + 18-200mmVR (I checked the exif)...he shot at f3.5 for group photos and Iso1600 and I was quite sure NR was rather high too...coz every photos that are not blurred are so soft...I wonder why sm1 would shoot with the 18-200mmVR for wedding...no matter what, the photos were disappointing..even my friend who didn't know much about photography got so upset by the pg...
I think that one more due to his technique leh. What was shutter speed like?
Not sure if the pros would shoot wide open for a group shot, even if they had an f/2.8 zoom.
DOF might (and I'm guessing here) be too thin.

Yup... for table or group shots, even at F5.6 you can get some of the people at the edges to go OOF if the group is big. Better to go at least F8 for bigger groups.

I agree about the dof...at f3.5, I couldn't really pin point who/where the pg was focusing coz everyone was soft...soft till it seemed everyone was oof...
probably it's a personal opinion, I kinda feel it's a poor decision of the pg to pick a 18-200VR for wedding. I thot I should give him the benefit of the doubt. In the end, the photos came out echoing my judgement...

So if I rent a D90 or D300 & bring along D5000 & use kit len + 200mm with 1 SB600 flash + 4 GP rechargeable batts, enough for full day wedding shots?

Reading through all the post, I suggest TS to consider seriously whether he is suited to take up the assignment as the main photographer.

The first question dealt with whether a D5000 is suitable.

His second question asks whether 4 rechargeable batteries are sufficient to last for a whole day.

I really feel sorry for whoever it is who hired you.

I remember what David Marshall said in an interview. "I used to charge $1 to clients who are poor. That way there is a contract. That way they can sue if I am negligent."

$50, $500 or $5000 that you charge for this wedding it makes no difference. You still have to produce results.

Please consider carefully your whether you are suited to be the main photographer. Perhaps asking for a role as a 2nd/3rd photographer first might be more ideal. It will give you a chance to explore your equipment if you have not done so yet.

TS don't really care la dude.

We just feel sorry for the unsuspecting couple...

under SG copyright laws, even you charge the wedding couple for $1, is also under "work for hire", your photos belong to the wedding couple, so if they don't allow you to use it for portfolio. you will be LL can not use it, going around KPKB also no use.
so better ask them to sign under the dotted line state you are the owner of photos.

not trying to bash the TS. but it look like he is hoping for a kind of answer like.

"...don't worry too much about what people said about your gear, be assured you will be good if you are doing it with your heart... "

"...I am also using some low/ entry level camera, but the picture i take out of the event blar blar, make the other who used super sonic high camera drool with my pix..."

Honestly, be afraid, be very very afraid.

D5000 is slow. very slow... U want to use a kit lens too, cant get a shallow DOF for those portraits.

U wan shoot wedding ar? Better get full frame bah, the bokeh is nicer. D700 FX lor. Better get something that covers a wide range. 18-200.

Flash, surely is needed, better to have 2 sets, from my own exp, SB600 has a faster recycling time, so unless u got those external power pack thingy (the name escapes me), better to use SB600. SB900 if the area is horrendously underexposed.

1 set of GP battery? I finish 4 pcs of ENELOOP battery within 2hrs continuous shooting with SB 900, maybe even less if alot of shots. With SB600, maybe slightly longer, because with SB600 I tend to shoot faster.

Better get someone who shoot before to guide you around, you give him the job and ask if you can be his assistant better for learning.

This is roughly a basic list of what you should bring:
-Body 1 (Preferably Full Frame) + Mid Range Lens + SB600 + Grip
-Body 2 (Maybe Crop) + Lens that covers a full range (maybe 18-200) + SB900 + Grip
-4 sets SPARE AA battery (4 x 4 pcs) (not including the ones inside battery already)
-Tripod
-4 pcs SPARE camera battery (not including those inside camera)
-Spare Memory card X2

To TS, any camera or lens is not enough for you to shoot the wedding for now and probably the near future. Why? Because you can't even figure out the pros and cons of your camera on your own which goes to show that you have not shoot enough with it.
