Is Clubsnap Moderator over react?

many moons ago, i was really against chngpe for being so literally strict in his moderation moves.i even had my fair share of friction with him.

however, over a time period of 2 years in cs, i realised he has done a good job in keeping off topics and duplication thread in Nikon folder.
rules are there to be followed, and to maintain 'order'.

i'm sure the last thing you want is to go into nikon folder, click on the thread of d700, for example, and find tons of irrelevant and offtopic postings, not to mention 10 threads on d700 WITH irrelevant/offtopic posts.

it aint easy moderating a forum.not to mention none of them are paid full time to do it.
i'm sure every mod in the forum has a day job to keep.and to be able to screen and filter through threads and posts, is something NOBODY will understand unless he/she is doing it himself/herself.

I only surf clubsnap once awhile. I am a person would like to read for info for any camera update. But in looking for recently D700 news, I accidentally found this comment from a moderator. I am a person will try search for info but sometime I also would love to see some common topic just at the recent pages without go thru tedious search, spend time to play hide and seek game.

If a new reader posted a very common topic in the forum, I really don't see any harm and stupid about it. The initial purpose of forum is to post and ask, not search and find needle in the sand. Even if the reader posted something is already post. I believe some helpful read also don't mind to answer it once again and also helpful to aid him/her to more detail link refer back to old post. instead of asking people to be a pro search here. example, if a old man 70 years old, post a common question again, then the moderator will start to close the thread and ask the 70 years old man read, "asking the some old question again and again. Do a search please ppl".

I believe there will be better way to handle such issue. I also understand not easy to be moderator. unless your readers are just the same old people here. Just a thought.

regards :)

There is already a thread on D700 pricing here http://www.clubsnap.com/forums/showt...=395745&page=9

Why can't just post thread instead of starting a new one?

Any members in Singapore are to note.

Camera bodies has no international warranty, ie Nikon Singapore does not recognised the warranty of any camera bought overseas. This has been stated many times by members here and yet there are still ppl asking the some old question again and again. Do a search please ppl

Also note that there is no GST in JB.

Anyway this thread will be closed and so with any future thread esp when there is already an existing one.

The reason for merging the thread is for precisely the reason you stated. ie so that members no need to search 10 threads of the similar to one that is merged. While it is tedious for the mod to merge and yet we do it for the members convenience (and added a reminder).

First to set the record straight

1. In that specific thread the TS was not even asking a question. He is starting a new thread to tell ppl that JB is selling the camera cheaper. See this : http://www.clubsnap.com/forums/showthread.php?t=399523

2. Where did this statement come from in the above quoted thread "asking the some old question again and again. Do a search please ppl" Obviously you took it out of my statement in that thread, to distort it out of context.

3. Despite my reminder not to start any thread of the same topic (in that thread), yet someone persist starting a new thread which of course will be closed as stated in the reminder. However, I even take the effort to show the url of the merged thread to direct all to it.

I am amazed that you can go thru 4 pages of the Nikon forum to search and bring that particular thread out. And I hope this thread was posted as a "feedback" other than with other intent
(PS. This thread was posted in kopitiam initially)

See this, is this contrary to what the TS was trying to portray of me

Though this subject has been posted almost 3-4 times a month, I let this thread pass till you get the answers. But to new members please do a search before posting

See the term of use S/No 2.

This is also not a place to direct member to your blog, which I shall delete that post.

Thanks jeannie, appreciate this.

forums have evolved much over the past few years but the same problems persist in almost every single one.

it is amazing clubsnap still exists.. many forums have come and gone due to infighting, bickering, miscommunication and all the negative stuff..

for a forum to grow there must be:

1. a vision
2. a plan to achieve this
3. the people to organise and make it happen
4. strong leaders (not necc moderators)
5. the people who control (the mods)

clubsnap has achieved this through sheer tenacity and will continue to make this happen.

the forum is NOT about the individual but about the WHOLE.

(just that the turnaround from newbie to contributor seems to take longer nowadays)

Is not possible to educate someone who has not been here before. We can choose to ignore the question but not giving the answer go do a search. I find that the TS will feel unwelcome. I do made this mistake when I first came in. It makes me feel very uneasy and keeps me stay away from posting more to ask qns. Who know which qns is being ask tons of time? Must search before ask? Then why not do a search on the questoin asked automatically and the search result will display before he can click submit.

Very nice example. If one joins a new community it is always recommended to be in 'read only' mode. Listen what the people are talking about, read what was said before (if available). This is not a harsh rule of CS but rather common sense for any forum or community. An online forum has the big advantage that you can read what was discussed years ago. So one should use this resource first before asking any question. (Btw: what makes you think that your question or problem is so unique that is has never occurred before? Chances are low, rather.) A good side effect (or actually it is the main reason) is that you learn to help yourself first instead of asking questions and hoping to get spoonfed. Finally one will learn much more this way. Secondly, if one comes with specific questions after reading several resources the answers are much more helpful. Once in a book I came about an interesting idea: The longer the question (because it needs a lot of details to describe the problem) the shorter (and preciser) usually the answer - and vice versa. So far I can confirm this, reading CS forum :)
Regarding your "automatic search": There is no technical solution to any social problem. Doing your homework first and checking existing information is a question of behavior. The "Search" function is a tool, enabling and helping you to do this.

my view is always exercise self moderation. whenever i see people asking common question, i will just ask them to do a search or to look up certain threads in certain sections. We have to educate them this way. So far, i think the moderators are doing their jobs well. Pls remember that most of the moderators are not paid to do the job, so help them by doing some self moderation.

Just to set the record straight, NONE of the mods nor admins are paid to do their job. We are all volunteers here. :)

now that chngpe01 (mod) has showed wad the truth of the grouse is about. i would like to apologize for taking wad the TS has posted at face value. how does CS mods deal with such schemers? deregistering their accounts?

while not many forumers have in-depth knowledge of the inner workings of maintaining CS, certain actions/in-actions are not so easily understand by most. so i hope those who contributed/ replied here will be given a benefit of doubt.

the success of CS has been cannot rest solely of mods & admin, for it would be pointless to continue operating when chaos has taken root. i agree with wad namesis32 mentioned- about self moderation, is the way forward.

& of course, more good years ahead (for CS)! :cheergal: :cheergal:

I almost forgotten I have post this. And I only managed to find it at feedback thru "search". My intention to post this is just coffee talk. Not a feedback to Clubsnap at all.
I should have illustrate it with another way, a woman 1st time pump into a shop and would like to check out D700 price. So without going thru the camera at display. She just ask the sales guy. However, the sales guy give her a kind of look, then point a finger over to a camera....a small little price tag below the D700 without saying a word.
If you are the woman, will you continue to buy the camera?

Impression.

Admin, I understand moderators here not work for money. Not all ppl will just work or sweat for money. Can be any form of return. Why become a volunteer? Want to archieve something? If that is archieved, is that a form of return? a value?

Maybe the structure of the forum should have changed to:
(1) auto search when topic title and content matched 80% will be rejected.
(2) Each topic post requires approval
(3) moderator rotation to other section, so they wont bore of the seeing same all topics.

All my opinion here is, is ok to advice to search history but in a nice way. and yes it will be again and again.
some ppl tired of seeing same old thing again and again because they are regular.
Of coz some ppl like me, only pop in once in a blue moon, is new to me. Just want to see what is the latest post and talk about. :)

alamak, i just post for coffee talk, see the poor guy ask little question kena such response thats all...

hi ztsen, your resentment as this situation plays out, which puts you in unfavourable light, is unfortunate. but my personal opinion is that your anology is flawed,

a woman 1st time pump into a shop and would like to check out D700 price. So without going thru the camera at display. She just ask the sales guy. However, the sales guy give her a kind of look, then point a finger over to a camera....a small little price tag below the D700 without saying a word.

and biased...

a victim of an overzealous mod or a malaise to this forum? that quote above has the answer.

may i suggest you patronize other shops instead?

CS is a mature forum (as in it has been around for years) and it is reasonable to expect common topics to have been asked b4.
unless it is a brand new forum w only a few posts, it is common etiquette for a new member to browse around for his/her interested topic before posting it anew.
All forums have more or less the same etiquette bah...

going into a shop to query about products is very different from a forum. forums like CS is sometimes like a source of self-help for members who are looking for answers to their questions, amongst many other functions. so be courteous and search for the topics of interest. it is not like a counter manned by someone who wants to sell a product in exchange for your cash.

many times i find answers from good folks in this forum and it's all free! so i really appreciate the presence and willingness of these people for their advice and info. new members likewise should appreciate all the folks here who made this one of the most popular and active forums around. Only with some self moderation and the kind contribution of the precious time of the moderators can this forum continue to thrive so long and still remain relatively well organized.

i think CS mods have done a magnificient job in keeping this site clean and tidy

But perhaps instead of Clubsnap Forum, it should be renamed as Clubsnap Archive since similar topics are not encouraged?

Suggestion to improve this forum are always welcome.

But taking a snipe with such condescending attitude and sarcasm, at this very forum which you are using FOC are not welcome. :thumbsd:

coffee talk finish.. go back to talk about photography.

topic post just to highlight the different of phrase use in word may cause different impression. If intention is to stop repeated topic. some general statement can be pre-draft to more friendly way and use to advise reader instead of type as what on the mind. just a suggestion. thank you.

Suggest you look at your self first. Cos the intention of you starting this thread is dubious
