Is $180 alright for a Vitacon 2.5x Teleconverter

Hi all,

Sorry if this discussion is old news to some of you guys here, but as I'm pretty new in these lens things, is $180 too much a price to pay for the above mention lens?

I just got my new Canon G9 and I went to Funan and had wanted to buy the Canon TC-DC58C 2x teleconverter, but the guy from the shop Bally Photo was recommending me this brand of lens saying it's better as it's 2.5x and $180 compared to Canon's 2x and $249...

Shortly after I purchased the Vitacon lens, I found this forum and registered and came to know of the inferiority of this brand reputation. Feeling uneasy, I went back to the shop to request an exchange to get the Canon instead, with me topping up the difference but they claim that it's their policy of no-exchange rule (which I know it's totally bull...).

Try as I might in getting an exchange, they just won't relent. Sigh...

I guess it's just lesson learnt for me and I'll definitely check with this forum before venturing out in the market hunting...

Just for consolation purpose, is it really such a bad brand? It's black in colour and it just had the print of "Vitacon 2.5x 58mm" on it's rim, though the box I got that comes along with it had the print AF Video on it... I'll try to load the pic once I get back home later... (Hah! Now officially declare "eat-snake" during office-hour!)

Someone posted here b4 that the price is less than $100.

G9 has good optics. Go for th original or the Raynox brand. Vitacon quality is not so good.

Look for a guy at the mass order thread called Jim McGill. He brings in the Raynox stuff from wide angle, to telephoto to macro lenses.

You're welcome. Never go to the shops in SLS except for the recommended ones like Alan Photo and Orient Photo.

THe rest are rip-off artists.
