As the filter blocks all visible light, I'll not be able to compose with that filter on. Using a tripod helps me to maintain my composition, if the subject doesn't move away too much that is.
When I do handheld, I do have shots with her out of my frame due to the blindfolded composition.
The self IR portraits which I've done are carefully positioned leaves on the floor to get the autofocusing distance, mount the filter, then manual focus before I go to the spot and pose
