Basically for modding a camera for IR you can:
1. Remove the hot mirror and don't replace with anything. You'll need to mount an IR filter externally. For P&S it's ok, as it can preview even with the filter on. For DSLR, you'll need to remove the filter to compose shot thru VF. You might encounter focusing issues with DSLR for this.

2. Remove hot mirror and replace with clear filter glass. This will be more relevant to DSLR as the CCD will be protected. For P&S, it's lens and CCD are usually sealed thus less chance of damage to CCD.

3. Remove hot mirror and replace with IR filter. This way your camera can only shoot IR. You'll also need to cut the IR filter to size. Also need to ensure the filter is the same thickness as the hot-mirror.
