Anyone here attempted shooting through an R72 filter on an RF with B/W film? Any ideas on the differences of exposure settings reported by the camera and the actual settings we must use? Also if anyone has any images to show.. that would be great..

I think the RF is an excellent camera for IR because we can still see through the lens as we shoot.. potential is there.. just getting the correct settings based on the camera light meter reading is a hassle andI dont want to go through dozens of 36s just to find out. Would appreciate any experience anyone has had with it..

On most modern RFs, the meter is TTL, so it should factor in the filter as well.

Best is to shoot IR with a digital RF.
Can see the results immediately and make changes on the spot until the exposure is correct. ;)

Not sure if the meter take into account the exposure characteristics of film with IR.. I dont have and can't get IR film here and I hear/read that its getting quite scarce there as well.. Am attempting to use Kodak Gold 400 to see if I can squeeze exposure from IR from that. Ii read somewhere it has some sensitivity to IR.. my Kodak Portra are Not IR sensitive at all.. trying out the Kodak BW now.. will try the Ilford XP2 next..

Tomcat,
As for Digital RF.. have to wait till I can 'afford' the M8 or someone has a cheap R1ds for sale :) Got one lying around somewhere? :p The other problem is the lenses I have are for the Contax G2.. and I happen to love those lenses.. so will stick to film for a while...

you need IR sensitive film to do IR film photography, film like Kodak HIE, Konica 720, you can't use ordinary film with R72 filter, you won't have any images recorded on film.
AFAIK, Kodak HIE is no longer in production.

like catchlights has mentioned..you need IR film to get IR effects...normal BW film wont do...
the most you can get is.."near-IR" effects with film like Ilford SFX200...or Agfa APX (this one i haven't try yet...but i read about it before)

Really...don't need to try R72 with BW film...don't waste your film.

Your best bet now would be Ilford SFX200. Or if you can try to get your hands on the Rollei IR film.

is it easy to find IR filter for RF lenses?
i mean the filter sizes are not that common right?

example the Voigtlander 15mm

can always use a stepup ring...also ebay do sell some odd sizes below the usual sizes from 3rd party manufacturers.

i think for the 15mm..u have to use some adapter to use filters right?

or maybe Gelatin filters which you can slot into the rear of the lens.

Ok. thanks for the heads up guys..

FYI.. i already have a R72 49mm for the G2.. just missing the HIE.. I just wish I can somehow port over the CZ from the G2 over to one of the digital RFs...
