I am new in IR photography. Recently bought a IR filter (R72) from ebay but the picture I took was just red colour???!!! BTW, picture was taken in strong sunlights.

Why? Anyone can tell me if there are any specific settings required? Thank you.

Do I need to process it in PS?

Yes, you need to do pp in PS or other software. I can give you the pp steps if you're Pentax user. For other camera brand, I'm not so sure. But one of the step is to do switch channel between the red and blue. You can get info from google (or perhaps try to find threat within CS).

Thanks for answering my questions. My bad....thought can get it straight out from cam. Sibeh Paiseh! :bsmilie::bsmilie:

if your white balance was done properly, your channel swap would turn out ok. Anyway, if you shot it in RAW, you can also select your white balance when you process your RAW. Assuming your WB is done, just have to :

1) Channel swap - Red Output - Red : 0, Blue : 100
Blue output - Red : 100, Blue : 0 (or just try out which ever values to see your desired effect)

2) Levels - Auto Level. Or you can manually pull the small black & white triangle marks up to the desired effect. or just auto level for start)

3) Hue/saturation - Adjust as desired

you can also put in a brightness/contrast adjustment as well.

Have fun processing! :bsmilie:

Hi blackgoddess, would like to ask a question, do I really need to shoot in raw for IR? for jpg I can still open up in Adobe camera raw and adjust the wb right? Thanks

Hi Kirkteo,

RAW will give you more control over whitebalance if you are unsure about it while shooting. JPG is better when your white balance is spot-on in the first place :)

Always remember to set custom white balance every time you are in a different lighting situation compared to last time.

Oh and yes the whitebalance is to be set on "Green" leaves / grass to get the traditional result.

Cheers,
Faisal.

Hi Kirk,
Actually i think it depends on the individual whether they want to shoot in RAW or JPEG. I just choose to shoot in RAW because i've been doing it since i started into photography so i just continue that practice. In RAW processing with Adobe Camera RAW you get to fine tune your adjustments i.e. choose your white balance, correct any vignetting, correct any lens distortion / pincushion, etc. After doing that, i tend to save in PSD and later just edit the PSD file. Then from PSD just add layers etc and then once i'm happy with it, i export to JPEG small size for posting online / FB while maintaining the big edited PSD so that next time if need to export in TIFF to print also can.(that's just me way of working. dunno about others).

I don't think you can open your JPEG in ACR. And i think once you set your WB in your camera and take the JPEG, you can't change it in Photoshop. (not sure about this one).

Hi Faisal & blackgoddess,

Thanks, for jpg, think I can still adjust the wb at adobe raw, I have not compared between raw and jpg whether which give me better control, maybe I shld try out and will feedback once I got it.

Thanks so much to you both.

Can try shooting at a patch of green then use that as custom white balance. The subsequent pics comes out white. That's what I read from the guides in the stickies here. :)

You need to PP a little bit as well. :)
