IR capabilities of 7D

Hi all! I'm new to IR and would like to know whether 7D is IR - capable. I read somewhere that newer cameras have stronger IR blocking filters hence they are less sensitive to IR than older cameras.

Also, on a side note, was wondering if IR photography will damage the sensor, since it has an IR blocking filter in place to filter out IR light?

no it will not damage sensor.

2: use a IR remote control, press infront of ur camera. view in live view. if it can see that reddot/flash, the cut off isnt that bad.

most newer cameras can do IR with long exposures.

Thanks alleonleonhart for the quick reply! Do you know where is a good place to purchase filters? Thinking of getting an R72 as well as a 590nm -600nm filter?

It's better on a 5dmkii than a 7d. Even Fatigue doesn't want to IR convert a 7d. Its harder to remove the inner filter or something. That's all I know.

hmm.. isn't IR converting a 7D or 5Dmk2 a tad bit expensive? since you have to have one system for IR and one for non-IR you will end up potentially having 2 7D or 5Dmk2 bodies...

Some can do it cos they can. :bsmilie:

For people on a budget we can also recommend the older cameras like 400d.. But since you specifically asked about 7d, why not right?

The FF on 5dmkii is excellent for landscapes. :)

lower IR cutoffs not so sure. normally we custom order them from fatigue, who custom orders them from his friend.

700, can get citiwide, its a good buy.
