Intending to get a dslr pls advice

prime lens the most affordable is 50mmf1.8, if TS can afford, add one more 17mm-35mmF2.8.

I will consider an essential lens for indoor shooting.

especially the 50mmf1.8 having a narrow "depth of field will give a very nice blur background and foreground, is a must have lens for portrait shooting

ebay should have the 3rd party one.

dunno why pentax go and discontinue the 50mmf1.7

may i ask which 3rd part mfr makes a 50mm f1.8 and 17-35 f2.8 for pentax? .

and the 50mm f1.7 was discontinued because pentax already makes a 50mm f1.4. make so many 50mm for what? :dunno:

one reason for sure, to make cheap 50 1.8 to throw away as free gift during IT show together with sdcard, tripod and dry cabinet :bsmilie:

For a short time, I did own a Canon DSLR and tried the 50mm f1.8
It looks and feel cheap with a plastic mount. The AF is also noisy.
Nothing as refined as Pentax-M 50mm f1.7
But it took good, sharp pictures for <$100 (used price).

If pentax have a AF 50MM f2.0 for $150... many will grap it

Thank you guys so much for your prompt replies. i am currently looking at KR instead of K5 as the price differs quite a bit. i wanted to get a dslr mainly due to better quality pictures than my current fujifilm finepix f200 exr. As my family recently added in a jack russel terrier we would like to be able to take photos of her as she moves and turn around quite fast. Therefore would like to post a new question is the 18-55 lenses suitable. and will the 18-55 lenses be able to zoom in from say few metres away from her. Next i would be going to Macau in June so i intend to take many shots in this trip therefore would need a zoom lenses? or other lenses? Not very good at this as i have not got myself alot of hands on. I have tried my friends EOS550d with the 18-135 lenses bt have not compared it with the 18-55 kit lenses which she implies that it cannot zoom at all. Therefore i am quite blur whether 18-55 kit lenses from pentax would be able to zoom in or i need to get a zoom lenses.

So final point, i am getting this dslr to take shots on my dog and also sceneries shots both local n overseas. i like to take portrait shots of my family members as well.

advice from a fellow photography newbie... I started off with a K-x with the kit 18-55mm lens, intended to take pictures mainly of my dog at home & outdoors as well as some landscapes plus candid shots of family & friends.

My experience is outdoors the 18-55mm covered most of my shooting needs - wide enough for certain landscapes shots & fast enough to keep up with an active puppy in good light. BUT found the reach lacking when in wide open spaces like the beach or dog run - ended up getting the 55-300mm separately & i'm now a happy camper! its really a wonderful lens for the price & you'll appreciate the extra reach when you're out with your dog.

Indoors is a different story though. I found that in spite of the very capable high iso capability of the k-x (i routinely take pictures at iso1600 with tolerable - to me - noise levels), the kit kens is not fast enough sometimes (max aperture is too small). The best solution is probably get a hot-shoe mounted flash as the onboard flash is not great for imho, because even though a faster lens (f1.4 to 2.8) may help to some extent it's at the expense of giving up some depth of field & still might not be enough to get sharp pictures of your active dog.

So my advice is like most of the others - start with a k-r dual-lens kit (18-55 + 55-300) until you figure out which focal lengths are most useful to you before you buy more lens. good luck!

Suggest K-r with dual kit lens package...

K-5 later on, if you find that you want something higher-end. Understanding how it works first, that's more important than which camera model you get. Both are able, so why go for the more expensive option?

So mainly i should get the kit lenses and the 55-300 instead of the 55-200 right?

The reach and IQ is better for the 55-300mm.

There is 1 thing going for the 55-200mm... size and weight... it is 260 grams (vs 470 grams).
I do miss it.

To be fair, I think no harm having a 50mm f/1.7 for people who don't want to pay the price tag for the 50mm f/1.4. After all, it is a lot cheaper to make a 50mm f/1.7, especially when you cut corners and don't care about the build. I think Pentax will do it nicely though, like for the 35mm f/2.4. There will be people who don't need a f/1.4 aperture and want to save money mar..

if the local supply situation is anything to go by, my suggestion is to go with whatever's available. both are good lenses.

Think in PnS camera, the sales always talk about how many times zoom. So for 18-55mm, it is equivalent to 3x and your Fujitsu F200EXR, its 5x zoom.

Please note that although 18-55 and 55-300 covers most of the range, you will need to change lens. Something I did not take note until my precious shot ran off while I was busy changing lens.

thats the point of getting a dslr isn't it? :) so u can change lens to suit different situations.

its always about trade-offs... there are "superzooms" like 18-200 or even 18-250 for those looking for convenience, but you compromise on IQ and speed with those lenses.

Hi there,
Yes I understand I would need more lenses in future and I have decided to go through wit purchasing KR wit 18-55 and 55-300. Which brand dry cabinet you peeps recommend for internal volume as I under diff brands carrying 48-68l might have different volumes internally.

What kind of blower and lenses cleaner is suitable for a newbie and also which tripod to go for? Understand there is a brand called sirui but not sure how much it costs? I need the tripod for overseas photo shots for capturing family shots.

Do sgcamerastore still carry the battery holder for AA batteries and also where can I get envelop batteries and it's charger at a reasonable cheap price.

Thanks in advance for my queries.....

yes the AA battery holder they still have

I am sure it is a good choice to pick the K-r + 18-55mm + 55-300mm

All dry cabinet which need power one should be alright...
the smallest one Digi-cabi 36 which is 30L is more than enough for beginner, except that you have a lot of budget to go for lens...
it cost in shop $118 (cheapest i have see so far) come with 5 year wty...
i have 2 k-x body + 2 Kits len + DAL 55-300 + another 3 lens + 1 Flash light in it and I still have 1/3 space for others like watches, harddisk and battery…

Rocket Blower can get online or some shop within $10… big one… don’t get those mini one that always give as free gift
Tripod can get those cheap one try first… about $70… but not those sliver color one that always give for free… not strong enough…
For battery and battery holder, can decide later whather AA batt or another orig batt… K-r come with battery and charge… that battery should last you at least 500 shoot per full charge… I think rechargeable AA batt is heavier than the orig batt(I guess only because the AA rechargeable that I use is 28gm each, while Li batt should be lighter than 100gm)…

hijack thread a bit....

im a new user also looking at Pentax K-r as my choice (eliminated Canon 600D and Nikon D5100 liao haha) but some queries here....

issit more worth it to get the 18-55mm kit alone, or 18-55mm + 50-300mm kit? Would the money saved on the 50-300mm be better spent on a prime lens, or issit better to start from there?

If I want to get a prime, is 50mm f1.7 good enough? Or should I go for 50mm f1.4? Is the difference in the two really that notable?

Another question I have is what filters should I get? UV filter is a must, but what other filters should I have?

Thanks in advance! Looking to join the Pentax club real soon :)
