Industy best software

Like to know which software in video editing is best in the industry, just like photoshop for photo editing.

Read any video format, merging, multiple format converting etc.

The "best" video editor may not be the best program for format conversion, so your question is not very clear.

Avid software is good, but support SUCKS!
I'd go for Apple's Final Cut Pro anytime!

And these statements come from an Avid trained editor with more than 10 years of editing experience for broadcast!

If anyone wants Avid software, I have an old Avid XpressDV 3.5.4 for sale CHEAP! Dongle included. Runs on Windows XP only, no more upgrades or fixes available, and you can forget about any potential support other than paying $$$ for upgrading to the latest Media Composer software.

Well.. If you have a maintenance contract no problem on support. Anyway, FCP is good too. My company uses both Avid and FCP.

Ya.. Premiere pro is from adobe.
Adobe has another program.. After Effects.

I had used 3 video editing softwares before, premiere pro, after effects and final cut pro. To me, the easiest to understand and use is Premiere Pro. But I personally prefer After Effects more.

In my humble opinion, there is no BEST video editing software in the industry. Each one of the video editors have his or her preference.

And since you said you are new to video editing, I guess the BEST video editing software is the one that works best for you.

I have edited videos using APPLE's iMovie 06 and Final Cut Pro 5. Both softwares are fun to work with.

iMovie 06 is easy to master and I've been able to produce good (in my opinion, of course ) wedding and corporate event videos with it.

Final Cut Pro takes a bit more time to master as it has a lot more features. The current version, FCP 6 can read and edit different video formats in the same timeline or project.

I think what is important to me is that I have to enjoy the time when I'm editing videos. If the software (any software) doesn't allow this, then what is the point of using it ?

I concur with Azman. There is no best software..
In this age, format is king.. Whatever software that supports the most format usually gets my vote. Currently FCP wins hands down price, support and UI wise..

I used to love working on Premiere in school, graduated and was an Avid DS artist doing online work, and jumping into Autodesk's smoke.. while avid had many state of the art feature lacking during media composer days, it was buggy in supporting non native formats like quicktime mov. Not forgetting non broadcast medium with odd dimensions.

Then came FCP.. The pain of converting all imported footage to the software's propriety codecs are gone, HD and 2k workflow is no longer is limited to Avid's DS or Autodesk's smoke for finishing. Not forgetting the vast amount of hardware and support available on apple's mac OS versus the hardware/software locked on avid and autodesk's linux as OS.

FCP opened up new grounds for editors in the industry. And compared with avid's or autodesk's systems, it sooo much easier to learn because I came from premiere, (other old school linear editors I've worked with might not agree) but you can't beat FCP for speed when working HD and 2k resolution.

All these sounds like alot, but the fact that FCP is used from professional film finishing to a primary school student class project show just how simple yet powerful the editing system is. :bsmilie: and consequently future proof as a skill to learn.

Hmm... Is this on Mac OS only? FCP is only for Mac... Avid/Adobe may have for Windows OS, but are they the better ones in Windows OS?

I think it depends on your needs. IF you just want to do basic editing, then this is probably one of the best. If you need fancy effects, go for adobe which is rather affordable. SpeedEDIT is about SGD$900. I got mine as a companion upgrade - as I have Lightwave 3D, a product of Newtek.
