I am struggling to shoot good indoor pictures using my flash. :( I use a 28-75D 2.8 & 5600 HS on a 7D. I also purchased an omnibounce. I have tried several different settings & flash directions with and without omnibounce. My exposures are sometimes not even consistent with the same settings. :dunno:
What settings do most of you use? I would appreciate any suggestions to try out.

show some samples with your exposure rate, then we can give u advice to improve.

if your flash has not fully recharged then you can expect some fall-off with each subsequent shot on continuous drive. is that the problem? i don't think its the omnibounce.

if you have a high ceiling or throw your flash at the wrong angle you'd likely drain the capacitors to provide full power, with no flash cut-off and that'll take longer to recharge for your next shot.

show some example with the setting u use, maybe that will help.

When using the omnibounce, be sure to set the flash metering to "preflash TTL", not ADI.

I also find that bouncing the flash in ADI mode tends to produce inconsistent exposures.

Now using the Gary Fong Light Sphere II which is pretty good.

Hope this helps a little :)

I always make sure the flash is fully charged when taking the picture and that the ceiling is light in color and not too high.
BTW I have put the camera in auto mode P. Do any of you have manual settings?
I have to look for the images, as I have thrown them away when cleaning my PC for some more space and at the time I was too embarrassed.:embrass:
I'll try the TTL option.

when you set to ADI, if you set your flash head pointing any angle other than the angle that simulate ADI, the system will automatically switch to preflash TTL.

For indoor shooting, recommend to use M mode for more consistent results. If i don't remember wrongly, using Flash in AP mode and M mode, will show different result.
If you take in AP mode, the flash output will differ from photo to photo depending on the metering, if in M mode it will be more consistent.

What's your distance to subject, ISO, aperture, shutter-speed, flash mode ?

Like other had said, best to show some sample and say what's lacking from the photos.

The distance is between 2 and 8 meters. I must admit I use everything in auto mode, so I presume ISO, shutter-speed are fixed?
I realized that I might have been a bit lazy just using auto modes and wanted to try some other settings. Therefore I am asking you experienced users for some direction.
I do not have acces to the PC with the pictures coming week. Therefore can't show them right now (if I still have them).

Try using A-Mode or S-Mode if you do not wish to use M-Mode.

Manual Mode on everything will help.. oh.. keep the AF and turn that AS on.

Hart

.....BTW I have put the camera in auto mode P.

That makes it a very expensive P&S camera!! I shoot in Aperture priority "A" most of the time, works well with my 5600HSD with pre-flash TTL, with AF (unless backside itchy and need the extra challenge) and AS on as Hart has rightly recommended. don't be afraid to experiment, just make sure its not an event where you are expected to deliver or are the main photographer :)

Thanks everyone, as soon as I am back in Singapore, I'll start trying out a couple manual modes.

normally, the changes of lighting during indoor isnt too dynamic, so experiment with a few settings in Manual mode first before sticking to the most preferred one

for me i prefer more ambience lighting in my photo so I will choose a quite low shutter speed of around 1/30sec normally....
