hi mod

pls look at this thread's #3 photo and decide if it is better to have it removed

http://www.clubsnap.com/forums/showthread.php?p=4022794&posted=1#post4022794

Can you please describe why you want to have this picture removed? Plain censorship is never a good idea, it should be discussed what's wrong (if there is anything wrong). Keep in mind: not everybody reading this forum is able to read Chinese characters.

i think myself and another cser had pointed out our concern.

while some issues is good for open discussion when face to face, eye to eye, there are others that shouldnt be discuss via open internet.

but thats only my opinion.:)

frankly i find nothing wrong, it is just laughing in the dark

it is also alright to post it up, *if* and only *if* people are mature when discussing such issues.

however, seeing how this condition can never be met on the internet, perhaps, maybe it is better to remove it.

i find nothing wrong with the photo.

I find it ridiculous that people should be stirred up by a picture like that. I fail to see why it is dangerous. I think it a sad day when we have to resort to censoring everything just because it might be perceived as offensive by a sensitive few.

I don't think TS is out to make an attack on any religion and this picture should not be taken out of context. It is clearly a travel/street shot and a very clever one at that. Interesting culture and if anything it speaks more about religious freedom than one that is putting any side down.

Some people need to grow up.

1) you are missing the important point here is not wherether people can read chinese.

2) i will like to add, my guess is, at least 50% do read chinese here becasue in all outing with different group here in cs, at least 75% do read chinese.

3) i dont think a cross is any form of language, but most people can link it with the more common things, eg red cross or religon.

which i also dont think that is what ts wants to achieve. pls refer to all my post regarding this. also, pls refer to night86mare's post.

yes, people need to grow up.

but you cannot make them grow up, can you?

it is certainly not offensive to you, me or the other people who are viewing the thread who have proclaimed themselves to be immune to any offense, and while i do subscribe to salman rushdie's line of thought that essentially religion is an idea and should not be immune to discussion or criticism; unfortunately sometimes that is asking too much of humanity.

the problem lies not with the picture, but the potential comments that will come from the immature people who will drag in 8000 other topics to flame each other after viewing the picture. by then, it won't be purely about the humour or any intended statement that the picture wants to make.

As long as TS doesn't state his intention we should also refrain from any interpretation. You only think what he wants to achieve ... which is pure interpretation. Let's see his own statement first.
If this picture is really that offending why haven't we heard anything about an outcry of the Christian community there? It's rather a sign of maturity of the people there that nothing happened and everybody is relaxed. So the picture could be a good lesson and example about religious tolerance and freedom.

you are talking about the wrong community, dude. even if interpreted wrongly and maliciously, that particular shot does not throw anything in the way of the christian community anywhere.

Then I repeat my initial question: what do the Chinese characters mean translated? Or what did I miss here?

if you want a literal translation,

"jesus is the lord".

and the buddha is pointing to that sign. now, maybe not all from that religion will take offense, but certainly you can't say that there won't be.

what is wrong with those photo?

can TS say more about it?

Ah, ok. Thanks for translating, now I get your point and the postings before make more sense to me. But still one could take it from both angles... both sides could be offended. Nothing happened which speaks in favor of the people there.
But interesting how a simple street shot showing nothing but reality can spark a request for censorship. The power of pictures :)

oh, see, misunderstanding caused by not talking face to face.

i didnt know you were referring to yourself not able to read chinese characters.

i thought you mean it is ok since not everybody can read chinese characters.

sorry.:sweatsm:

the reason why i had highlighted this photo to mod is because i had once posted an image titled "religious harmony" without enough writeup and it caused some-misunderstanding. so i learn from my mistake and hope others can learn from mine.

reality is subjective. pictures are powerful , no doubt. a picture can change the world, if it is shown enough, and impactful enough.

just look at che guvera's simple portrait. or mao's portrait. or many other pictures that have surfaced in various manifestations again and again throughout time. :)

I realised I might have come across a little blunt in my previous post, but rest assure I come in peace

No doubt those are good intentions :). I haven't seen the thread in question, nor am I aware of what transpired, but I have a few questions based on your reply. Was what you did really a mistake? Why did you have to provide a detailed write-up to explain a picture that you took? I can understand how it might be "mis-interpreted" otherwise, but did you actually owe these people an explanation?

I feel that by promoting such behaviour it would be as if we were guilty until proven innocent. Any picture we post up we need to explain and clarify in order not to cause "misunderstandings". What happened to benefit of doubt? What happened to tolerance and understanding?

Havent we learn from the Denmark case? The photographer is not naive when he took the picture.. That picture doesnt fit the title he presented and i think he should quit stirring up the hornet nest!!! For all i know , there is no way to show that he didnt set up the whole thing himself for this shot..
